From a citizen's point of view that is a horrible idea for them to spend what looks like a lot of money (I don't know the exchange) for flip flops for drunks. From a foot fetish point of view, I would probably be outside watching all the drunk girls being handed their flip flops.

"According to local authorities, women on a night out are in danger of hurting themselves by attempting to walk home in high heels, or by removing their shoes and risking cutting their bare feet."
I´m sure this will be a dissapointment for people (like me) who love seeing women remove their shoes and walk barefoot in public.

Some European economy`s are actually doing very well (for example Germany). If the European Union was a single country it would be the world`s largest economy (by GDP) See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Europe

That's great Hal, if California were a country, it would be the worlds eighth largest economy which would make it larger than all but the largest EU nations. Point is, CA is not a sovereign nation and neither is the EU.
Germany logged GDP declines in the second and third quarter of 2008, the EUR/USD has been getting crushed and declined 13.50% year over year by my calculation (if you from the school of thought that considers currency to be a nations stock, this is not a good sign). The ECB is lucky their inflation woes have declined over the last quarter and they have some breathing room to cut rates and try to jump start their ship.
Anyhow, it's common knowledge that historically the euro zone economies grow at slower clips than the US and many emerging markets (e.g China, India, Poland, UAE, Bahrain) by about .05%-1%, which is a lot when were talking about billions of dollars. Lastly, I'm pretty sure German unemployment hovers around 9% and get's as high 11%. That is abominable for western standards.
Granted I'm sure folks there and in other socialist societies have less to worry about since the gov supplies them with the basics. The cost is clear however, less incentive, less individual opportunity to profit, less growth and higher unemployment on average. But hey, party girls who are likely adding the least value to the economy and society in general, relative their counterparts, get free flip flops, instead of those dollars going to support R&D for new and innovative businesses ventures -- so it's worth it

High Arch Analyst, I don`t really want to argue about economics in a foot forum. Everybody knows that the USA is the largest national economy in the world. I also fully agree with you about the flip-flop incident...it is obviously a waste of tax money. But wasted tax money by governments is a worldwide problem (not just in the UK) and this specific flip-flop case has nothing to do with the apparent decline of "European economic growth". It is not representative for the way tax money is usually spent in Europe. Plus, some economies in Europe are growing pretty fast, as you unintenionally proved in your second post (the emerging markets of Poland are obviously a part of Europe).

oh gawd, i'd be cumming on a lot of those flip flops fer sure cuz it would be like end of nite and most of those hotties would be putting their stinky feet on them.
i'd love to be one of the guys handing them out too. i'd try to convince some of the hottest girls to trade me their abusive stinky shoes in exchange for comfy flip flops.
wonder how many times this would work, and i also wonder how many of those girls would immediately look down at my crotch when i ask them

People do dumb things - this simply cannot be prevented. To burden law enforcement agencies with the task of "Dumbness Prevention" is, in itself, dumb.
Then again, as I mention it, governments are more prone to do dumb things than are individuals. Perhaps we should have an arm of the police arresting our legislators before they can do more damage.

Haha. Here's a fun story. I'm definitely male by all means, and i don't wear high heeled anything, unless you consider the fact my heels on steeltoed boots are a bit higher than my DC's that i wear everywhere else. I don't tie them tightly and i fit fine in them.
Don't matter what kinda shoe's i'm wearing at the point i'm inebriated I can trip, fall, bust my ass, bloody my damn knuckles, and bruise the palm of my hand hitting the pavement on the walk home cause i got kicked outta the club for bein too drunk.
Def, walked home from the club the other night, the owner asked me politely to leave at which i had no problems doing, i was obviously looking like a fuck (drinking prior to going out is usually a bad idea, but after a 6pack n half, plus a half bottle of soco 100 proof, i'm not thinking in my best interest) Fell without tripping, caught myself (bruised palm), some how i rolled on my ass, or fell back on it (don't remember for sure) and also lost a shoe, had to pick it up...And somehow, i rolled and bloodied all four of my knuckles for my fingers on my non palm bruised hand.
Moral of the story?
Don't drink if you can't walk home, and for christ sakes, if you know you're getting hammered, DONT DO IT IN HIGH HEELS (though the high heels part means nothing in my story, but flat shoes aint gonna stop you from falling on your ass, walking out of your flip flops or tripping over them too)
Wow, what waste of taxpayers money!
