I have nothing against metallica today, but I crave the sound of metallica during 1988-89. That was when Jame's voice was in its prime. If it was properly funded, could we find a cover band that could sound like old Metallica of that era? We need a guy who sounds like the James Hetfield 88-89. We need a band that that matches the sound of metalllica live 1988-89. If a rich metal fanatic was determined to do this, could we have a young band who could remind of us this legenary period of Metallica?

"Sell-outica," uh, er, I mean Mettalica? I used to love them. I remember sitting in my apartment in Los Angeles, listening KNAC, waiting for the "new Metallica" single to come on the radio. I waited in atticipation and then it came on... "Enter Sandman." My mouth fell agape. I was so disappointed.

After all the acclaim they receive for the "One" video, they changed.

Now they take themselves way too serioulsy. James is trying too hard to sing and he cannot. Their music is watered-down.

You know, at first, I hated Megadeth (because of Dave's voice), but the music caught me. Eventually, I overcame Dave's voice.

I can safely say that Megadeth has maintained musical complexity throughout the years. Dave still writes riffs with some complexity. James doesn't.

Plus, why does James have such an ego? Dave taught him how to sing and play at the same time (extremely evident on their demos and Kill 'Em All, as James almost mimicks Dave's vocal style) and Cliff taught him how to read music.

But, James and Lars have shit on Dave for years. They took the songs he wrote which was the majority of Kill 'Em All, Call of Kthulu, For Whom The Bell Tolls, and Ride The Lightning (which was originally titled "The Hills Ran Red) and then talked bad about him.

Dave never said an ill word about them. But, they disrespected him over and over again.

Anyhow, I like older Metallica, but the new stuff blows.

From 1990 to 1993 we had a band in Los Angeles, called Cannabis (before the rapper came out using the name). Our influences were old Mettalica, Megadeth, Exodus (which Kirk Hemmet was a memeber of, prior to joining Metallica) and Hexenhaus.

Hexenhaus was a Swedish band which featured Mike Wead (ala King Diamond). The singers (different ones on each album) all pretty much sucked, but the music was like Yngwie Malmsteen gone thrash. The music ROCKED! (Anyone who has a chance to pick up The Edge Of Eternity get it. The vocals are not that great, but listen to the guitar work)

Anyhow, that period is still living with bands like Kreator. Old-school thrash still lives, but as far as someone singing like James, well if someone did it, it wouldn't be the same. It would be like someone copying him and it would lose its effect. (I think)

That's funny, I'm actually listening to Master of Puppets on my iPod right now as I type this (...bow to Leper Messiah...). I agree with you about James' vocals being at their prime during the 88-89 time period. I like his vocals on "Garage Days Re-Revisited" too (1987), but "Justice" is my favorite Metallica album for his vocals.

I've seen a few Metallica cover bands, but none of them can replicate James' "Justice" quality.

I dunno Ash, back in the day Dave and Metallica were really trashing each other in interviews. I'm trying to recall old articles in music magazines from the time "Peace Sells" came out. I'm a fan of both band's music from that era, so that really doesn't bother me.

I haven't bought a Metallica CD since the black album in '91 either. Their music totally did take a turn for the worse when they became popular and trendy.

Metallica's demise after "Justice" can be summarized in two words: Bob Rock

[Mad]
