I'm not sure how successful this topic will be here, since it seems like most people here seem to prefer Sony and Microsoft to Nintendo, but since this is Smash Bros., perhaps a few of you will be interested.

DETAILS
Both Versions:
-Gameplay mechanics take cues from both Melee and Brawl, but is ultimately closer to Brawl. However, the much-hated "feature", random tripping, has been removed; certain attacks will still cause tripping, though.
-Certain characters' models (particularly the ambidextrous characters) are mirrored so that their frontsides will be facing towards the camera; this is similar to what many recent 2D fighting games such as Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Street Fighter IV did.
-Some characters have gotten moveset revamps since their Brawl appearance. Characters that used to Transform in the previous games will no longer do so, and as such, they have been split off into their own characters; the exception being the Pokemon Trainer team, where only Charizard returns as a playable character. Finally, some characters have gained new Final Smashes, notably Pit and Luigi.
-Both versions have a different set of stages, with the 3DS version having stages taken mostly from handheld games, and the Wii U version taken mostly from console games. Some stages are shared between versions, however (such as Battlefield, Final Destination, Boxing Ring, and Gaur Plain).
-Each stage has an "Omega" form, which changes the layout of the stage to resemble Final Destination, while keeping the original stage's visual themes and music.
-Some stages have boss characters on them, who will disrupt the battle in some way. However, players can fight back and send them away, with the player delivering the final blow benefiting in some way. Boss characters include the Yellow Devil from Mega Man, the Dark Emperor from Find Mii, Ridley from Metroid, and Metal Face from Xenoblade Chronicles.
-Global Smash Power is a new scoring system that ranks players' progress in various game modes against other players. For example, a GSP of 875,989 with Mario in All-Star mode means that the player is better than 875,988 other players who used Mario in All-Star mode. Players need to connect online at least once to activate Global Smash Power, and need to connect online regularly to update the GSP.
-Both versions will take advantage of the new Amiibo platform, so players can do things such as take their play data to a friend's house, or insert certain characters into battle to help them out. The AI levels for Amiibo characters can go as high as 50. They also adapt to the tactics of their opponents. The Wii U version will have Amiibo support immediately, while the 3DS version will gain it at a later date, with the release of a peripheral for older 3DS models; New 3DS models will have Amiibo support built into the system.
-There are two new online modes called "For Fun" and "For Glory". In For Fun, players fight two-minute-long matches with all Items on, and with every stage possible except for Final Destination. In For Glory, players fight five-minute-long, two stock matches with no items and only on the Omega forms of stages; in this mode, one-on-one battles are possible. In either mode, Customizations and Mii Fighters cannot be used; these can only be used when playing with Friends.
-There are now penalties for players who partake in forms of abuse and exploits online, with those players being banned from playing online for a time, and the more they abuse the system, the longer their punishment will be. Players' Nintendo Network IDs are also visible during online play.
-Players can create Mii Fighters, using Miis from their system memory. They can choose from three classes--Brawler, Swordfighter, Gunner--and can further customize their stats, Special moves, headwear, and clothing. The Mii's size also affects how they fight, with smaller Miis being faster while bigger Miis are more powerful.
-Players can also customize the characters in the game. They can give them equipment which can alter their stats, and change their Specials to function differently than usual. Palutena and the Mii Fighters are unique in this regard in that all of their custom Special moves are completely unique from one another instead of being mere variations.
-All-Star Mode is unlocked from the start, but will not be considered complete until all of the characters have been unlocked, which is notated with a padlock symbol on the mode description. In All-Star Mode, characters are now battled by their individual debut year, grouped by eras, starting with characters who debuted in 1980-1983, and ending with those who first appeared in 2007-2013. In the Wii U version, you battle the most recent characters first, and make your way back to the classic characters.
-There are over 600 Trophies to collect in both versions, with the 3DS version confirmed to be at 686. Both versions feature a Trophy Shop where players can spend ingame currency on Trophies; in the 3DS version, the player has the option of using Play Coins instead.
-DLC will be made available to add additional content (characters, stages, Mii Fighter outfits) to the game.
-There was a character ballot made available for fans to tell Nintendo who they would like to see as additional DLC. However, the ballot ended on October 3rd, 2015. On December 15th, 2015, Bayonetta was announced as the winner of the ballot and added to the game's roster nearly two months later.

3DS Version:
-The 3DS version runs at 60fps, even with the 3D on. However, to compensate, the Assist Trophies and Pokemon only move at 30fps, and there can only be one of either on the screen at a time.
-On that note, the 3DS version is one of the most hardware-intensive titles released on the platform yet. In order for it to run as smoothly as it does, it borrows power from the 3DS OS itself, which in turn disables the ability to use Miiverse or the Internet Browser while Smash 3DS is running, and when the game is closed, the system restarts. The New 3DS, which has stronger specs, will not have these issues.
-In the 3DS version, characters have outlines around them to make them easier to see with the 3DS's smaller screen. However, these outlines can be made to be thinner or removed outright in the Options menu. During team battles in both versions, characters will automatically have outlines colored to match what team they're on; this allows players to for the first time in the series freely pick a character's costume during team battles.
-The 3DS version has 105 Challenges for the player to complete, split into three boards. Players can unlock hammers while completing challenges to use on ones that they deem too difficult; however, hammers cannot be carried to other boards, so use them while you can.
-Classic mode consists of five stages before the battle against Master Hand. Plays can take different branching paths to fight different opponents, with the path colored to show its difficulty. Classic mode has an Intensity scale similar to the one in Kid Icarus: Uprising, where completing the stages on higher difficulties will earn you greater rewards. Depending on the Intensity, the path to the final battle may branch off to a fight with both Master Hand and Crazy Hand, and if the Intensity is high enough, something strange may happen partway through that battle...
-The 3DS version has a new game mode called "Smash Run", inspired by the City Trial mode of Kirby: Air Ride. In it, players explore a vast map filled with enemies from several Nintendo games, collecting power-ups and treasures. This lasts five minutes, and when it is completed, the powered-up fighters will compete against each other in one last showdown, be it a standard Smash battle, a special type of Smash battle, or a competition of some sort. Customizations are allowed here, and players can additionally outfit their characters with Powers to aid them during the Run.
-The 3DS version opts for a Melee-style approach to stage music: each stages has two songs tied to it, and while the game will randomly choose between these two songs (with priority on the first/"main" song), players can trigger the second song by holding the R button while selecting the stage.

Wii U Version:
-The Wii U version will have a 1920x1080p resolution, and will run at 60fps.
-In the Wii U version, the character models are not as highly-detailed and realistic as they were in Brawl. Instead, there is more of a focus on brighter palettes, allowing the characters to look much closer to their appearances in their home series.
-My Music returns in the Wii U version, with each stage having several tracks set to play on them. Players can adjust how frequently each song plays.
-Compatible controllers: Wiimote, Wiimote + Nunchuk, Classic Controller [Pro], Wii U Pro Controller, Wii U GamePad, GCN Controller via an adapter, and the Nintendo 3DS via link.
-Eight-player battles will be possible. In this mode, not all stages will be available, but there will be a special variation of Battlefield that's much larger than the original one.
-The GamePad can be used to paint on and edit snapshots taken during gameplay. There will be a feature later on to share these pictures with other players.
-Stage Builder returns in the Wii U version. Players can use the GamePad to freely design and create stages. There are more themes and elements to use than there were in Brawl.
-Smash Tour is a new Game Mode where players explore a world in a board game-like setting, picking up items, power ups, and fighters, while trying to avoid other players and enemies. At the end, they engage in a stock battle against each other with the fighters that they acquired on the game board.
-Classic Mode is much different in the Wii U version, with you engaging on a board against several other fighters until you're the last man standing. You will also have a Rival character to challenge your progress. This mode can be played with two players. Master Core from the 3DS version returns, and he has an additional form, called the "Master Fortress", in which the player explores the large, dungeon-like creature to destroy it from the inside.
-The Wii U version will allow for both Special Smash, Coin Battles, and Tournaments.
-Event Battles return, and now are displayed on a map-like grid. Completing Event Matches opens up new paths to new battles to complete.
-Special Orders is a new game mode in which you complete special challenges for Master Hand and Crazy Hand. You have once chance to complete the challenges, and completing them will net you some Rewards. Crazy Hand's challenges are much more difficult, and you have to pay to have a go at them. You can fight as many battles as you feel you are capable of before challenging Crazy Hand, but knowing when to stop while you're ahead is key to keeping what you've fought so hard for...
-The Challenges board is present. Though there's only one board (compared to the 3DS' three), there are 140 Challenges to clear, putting it well over the 3DS' 105 Challenges.
-Home Run Contest, Target Blast, Trophy Rush, and some other modes can be played with more than one player.
-Masterpieces are back, allowing you to play for a brief period some of the classic games relating to the fighters and stages in the game. There will also be a link to allow players to buy these games from the eShop if they like it.
-All of the trailers relating to this game (including character reveal trailers) will be viewable ingame.
-Tourney Mode is available online. Players can create their own tournaments, or enter official tournaments hosted by Nintendo.
-Replays can be converted into a video and uploaded onto Youtube. In order to do so, you need both a Google Account and a Youtube channel. Note that you can not upload replays longer than three minutes.

Now, I am especially looking forward to this game, especially after the Direct last week. While Greninja was not even on my radar as a possible newcomer, I'm still looking forward to playing as it; he looks pretty cool. Here's hoping that Mewtwo makes his long-awaited return as well.

Little Mac is another character that I wanted who made it in. He looks beastly. ...So long as he stays on the ground. [Laugh] And Mega Man looks great as well, especially his Final Smash, which is fanservice of the highest caliber.

Here's hoping that Chrom (Fire Emblem), Palutena (Kid Icarus), and Shulk (Xenoblade) join the battle as well! As well as the rest of the Brawl cast.

And in case people are interested, considering this forum's subject; there is a barefoot female character in the game in Wii Fit Trainer. Of course, her skin is literally white as snow. At first, I was skeptical about her being in the game, but she has grown on me and I am definitely going to try her out (note that the male version of Wii Fit Trainer can also be selected; this was revealed in the months since her profile was placed on the site, and elaborated more on in the Direct).

I'm going to get Smash for my Wii U (along with Mario Kart). I bought the Wii U Zelda bundle, but in all honesty, the system has say idle since those early days. Miss the days when Nintendo made all the great games, had 3rd party support, and didn't rely on dumb gimmicks.

With yesterday's E3 reveals, I'd added new info to the OP. There may be more info today.

Meta Knight has been added to the OP.

We're a month away from the Japanese release of the 3DS version, so pretty soon, the floodgates will open.

Looking good for sure. I never owned the Smash Bros. for the Wii, I did love the hell out of the Gamecube title.

The 3DS version has been available in Japan for a few days now, but early copies got out a couple of days before. We know the full roster now. At least, the full roster before any possible DLC.

I'm disappointed that Mewtwo didn't return, but the gains in this game more than make up for that. I can't wait for October 3rd to get here.

I haven't played it yet, but I do own it. Been working on finishing a few games I started on the PS3/PS4/360 before trying it out.

While out yesterday I also picked up a Samus and Link Amiibo. Was only going to get Link, but Gamestop was sold out so I got Samus. After that I stopped at Best Buy to pick up the new Planet of the Apes movie and they had some, so I ended getting him too.

I don't know how much I am going to use these things, but I think I'm going to get every single one they have from the Zelda universe just to have. They look bad ass!

I got Yoshi, Wii Fit Trainer, and Marth. I had to order Marth online, because the store didn't have him. He seems to be the rarest Amiibo right now.

I've also preordered the Shulk Amiibo, since I can see that one being rare as well. Especially since it's a GameStop exclusive. I'll also be getting Lucario (Toys 'R Us exclusive), Toon Link, maybe Meta Knight, Ike, and R.O.B. and Robin when they're announced.

As for what they're used for, they're basically AI fighters that you can teach to fight. They start out weak, but grow and adapt to your fighting style and that of whoever else they fight. You can also power them up by "feeding" them equipment.
