Mikey P is right, your paying alright. When you consider the FULL costs i.e. time, energy, opportunity costs, in addition to all the money you put into the relationship and the money you stand to lose on the back end if it doesn't work out. It's the quintessential bad investment. The downside risk is too high and too probable.
If you want to waste your time and money -- go to Vegas.

maybe its naive if me, but i genuinely believe in true love and equal partnership. not all women are coniving, manipulative, high-maintenance wives who are just secretly after a juicey divorce settlement.
marriage is when you are saying to the world that you love this person so much, you dont want anyone else. i dont care what anyone else says, i think if youre counting up the 'time and energy' youre putting into a marriage (or any relationship for that matter) then you shouldnt be in it. marriage shouldnt be a chore, or looked at like an 'investment'...its hard not to revert to cliche, but id rather be a naive stereotypical optimist than an embittered pessimist.
thats just my 2c though.

I don't want to "high jack" this thread and get into to any kind of a debate here, but I feel compelled to respond to Athena. First, Athena, I never stated or even suggested that women were any of the things you stated above. My comments were directed towards the institution of marriage in general, which I believe is bankrupt.
Second. You are naive if you think marriage is primarily about love. I think it's safe to assume when most couples get married they are in love. However if over 50% of them are getting divorced and falling out of love, clearly this suggest love is marginal in holding a relationship together. I'd be more focused on the managing the day to day aspects of a marriage as opposed to the over arching concept of love, if I were foolish enough to get married.
Third, the state of CA and many others apparently do view marriage as investments. It's basically a fixed income instrument. Think about it. You pay a lump sum up front and therefore are entitled to a series of future cash flows. Is alimony any different except for the the fact that the up front cost of a marriage includes time and energy on top of the money you put in? Are they both not legally binding contracts? If either party backs doesn't hold up their end of the agreement, where do you settle the dispute?
