Sites such as Ticketsclub allow a few types of memberships, 2 of those choices are (for example):
1. 1 month for $25 2. recurring membership $20/month
If I remember correctly (it's been years since I joined a paysite) that if you join using the recurring membership option, you can cancel it immediately and only be charged for $20 for 1 month, correct? is that still how it goes?

Pretty much. Believe it or not, some people are too lazy to do that. We, of course, like people who join our sites to reoccur and that is why we make it cheaper if you're going to stay around. As far as I know though, sites can't stop you from doing what you mention.

Patrick is more likely to know in this specific case but I know that with any reoccuring payment I make, I need to give a months notice.
There is also often a minimum number of months subscription. If there isn't, I'd guess that 2 would be the minimum, if you had to give notice.

You should be fine. Just read the fine print when you sign up. I do not think you need to give a months notice unless it specifically stated so when you sign up.
Most sites use an automated service (at least those that I have subscribed to) that let you easily cancel the recurring subscription. I have done this with 5 sites. All 5 let me continue to use the site once I canceled until my trial period was over.

I have people sign up and cancel less than a minute after signing up. It can be done. They still have the subscription for the month they signed up for.

Happens all the time. I lowered the one month recurring price just for the real reason to offer people sticking around a little deal. And yes, people do sign up for the lower recurring rate and then cancel immediately! (I SEE YOU DO IT PEOPLE!!!) But hey, times are tough. I still have a dude paying the original $12.95 a month that I offered almost 4 years ago!
