Today I joined two Greek guest students at University. We sat down in the grass and I waited to see them take shoes and sneakers off but they didnot. When I asked why one of the girls told me she thought it was inconvenient. And the other girl agreed. I asked them why but they had no answer. I said I could close my eyes while they did it, but they said they were not shy to show their feet. But it was unconvenient.
Can someone explain? Is it inconvenient for a Greek girl to show the feet or is it inconvenient to remove shoes and socks?? It makes their feet more interesting. How shall I see their feet?

I think they meant it is inconvenient to take off socks and sneakers b/c then you have to put them back on before you get up from the grass. Maybe they re like me, once I take off a pair of socks, I don't put them back on again, not until they've been in the wash.
I think if they were in sandals or flip-flops, you would have seen their feet.

Who knows it may be a variety of reasons why they decided not to reveal their barefeet. Perhaps it was an inconvenience, maybe they feel they have ugly feet, or perhaps they were just simply weirded out by your request. Too bad they weren't wearing flip flops, just a simple removal and they're barefoot!

Or it also, Joef, could be greek customs, as some countries have various immoral customs that are just commonplace and a-okay in the United States. In one country (can't remember if it is Greece) it is improper to stick up your entire hand palm facing forward, to hail a taxi. Instead, you are to have the palm of your hand face you and in a fist. Just read this last week in USA Today and wanna say it is Greece, but I am not one-hundred percent of the country where this is considered improper.

Eliza, if they were in sandals or flip flops... Of course you'd see their feet, no way around that.
But yeah, why not ask a girl to remove her pants to have a sit down. It's just like getting dressed and undressed. It's a pain in my ass and i'd go naked everywhere possible, if possible. And as eliza said perhaps once the socks came off, they didn't want to put the same ones back on. I can't stand having shoes and socks on, taking off a pair of socks after having my feet been in them for any amount of time and then putting the same ones on without having them been washed.
Really think it has nothing to do with nationality, just if you're in a break situation why on earth would it be convenient in anyway to remove 2 articles of clothing just to satisfy somebody's curiosity on the spot, to put them back on to go attend another class? Just off of school and not puttin them back on would be different, in a home setting or in a car perhaps for an extended period, but not on a break.

I've seen girls with shoes and socks on take them off in a public places! Perhaps these two ladies just didn't feel like baring their feet. Maybe they were uncomfortable doing it, at that time.

Well that is obvious. I meant that it would be more typical for a girl to slip off a flip-flop than take off a pair of socks and sneakers.
