plus I think it is extremely odd looking seeing two people of the same sex do anything sexual together

Personally, I don't mind either the guy/girl or the girl/girl scenario, especially if they're into what they're doing. If it's a guy/girl, I picture myself in the guy's position. If it's a girl/girl. I picture myself in the same room watching!
