http://www.themercury.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5936,18801464%255E3462,00.html

Brief Synopsis:

This article states its starting in Tasmania on a test run, but will hit mainland Australia after that! Basically porn sites will be blocked at the ISP level and if you want to access them you have to get in touch with your ISP to unblock them. Simple enough, but I think that a list of the folks who make calls to have it unblocked will probably be given to someone outside of their internet provider.... Big Bro loves ya baby!

I'm not Australian, but I know a few regulars here are. What's your take on this guys?

I hope this doesn't swing this way --US. We already have restrictions on us now. Adding this would only make a lot of us go nuts. I am all for keeping this material away from young kids, but for responsible grown people who enjoy a healthy sex life and cause no harm, no. You should be able to enjoy ADULT entertainment without strange looks because you are an adult. Those that don't care for it, don't look. Grown people shouldn't be treated like children when it comes to sex and children should never be treated like an adult. Just my $0.02.

This has been an issue for a very long time.

I have no problem with keeping environments safe for children (the whole point of the law in most justifications) but I have never felt that the net was a safe place for children at all!

Forget the Porn, what about the more dangerous Hate sites (protected by "Free Speech" because it is just words!)and the more subtle dangers of places like my space?

This opinion gets me in trouble elsewhere, and I am new here so am taking a chance stating it (but I hope you will understand my intent better than the average person): I say it is better to Ban the Unsupervised Children from the internet!

That way anything that happens to a child online is the fault of the Parent.

The web was never meant for children.

It was invented by a bunch of scientists as a "Bulletin Board System" for sharing data.

It just grew up.

But people did not grow up with it and now we have this mess.

I worry about the future sometimes...

I totally agree with you, Sockratease!

The government is so worried about the pornography and is completely ignoring stuff like the hate websites, myspace, etc. that can be just as damaging, if not more damaging.

What's missing, and has been missing for quite awahile now, in this culture is the concept of accountability, the idea that certain actions one does (or doesn't do) will have some kind of effect that one is (God forbid) responsible for further on down the line. Everyone is so damn quick to "pass the buck" on to someone else and not claim responsibility for their own actions or non-actions.

Parents should be the ones keeping an eye on their kids, not the government! I'm all for protecting kids too and I think you're right when you say the internet is no place for kids to begin with. It's an adult tool and should be used as such.

Another good point to be made would be....

If you want limit to your internet access on XXX sites why not call your ISP yourself and request it?

Hmmmm?

Truthfully,I think this is the dumbest shit I've ever herd.I feel if this law comes in full effect, its going to bite them back in the ass and this is why.
Our generation is more "techie" than the last and I find the generation after us is even more "techie" then we were @ their age.hacking is somthing of yesterday, know what I'm saying??.what could be a possibility is the type of people they say this law is protecting minors from would give thease sickos a new way of luring minors.think of this, ina chat room two so called minors(one being legit, the other being a 58yo sicko)discuss "gee I soo wish I could some porn"and the "socalled" minor would be like "well keep this dl,here's a link with no password, its an underground site.the minor goes on and you have to make an account.and what you think is the georgouse model on the page pms him or her and says "hey we are looking for a new model for me to fuck, send me some pics and we'll get back to you.in reality its not that model u think your talking to,its the same 58yo that gave u the site address and now is going to take thease pics and put it on another underground site thats based around underage porn.
See what I'm saying?,this is one example on how this law could turn into new "candy" for pediphiles to lure the young in with.an easy way to lure them in.now when I was 15 or 16 and on adult sites,if I got a pm like that from what I thought was the hot model, you damn straight I woulda sent pics in.
Just like in real life where there's shady places were children should stay away from(drugspots, raves, underground shit)its the same in cyberspace if you think about it and a law like this would force teenagers into going to a shady world that's online and as we all know, when a place is shady and unlawful, anything could happen and this law would create a shady underground that minors would now have to enter jus to get some porn.
Maybe my morals are differant than some of yours being I'm in my mid 20's and have no children, but I feel when u know your ready and you want to watch porn and masturbate about it, and leave it @ that, you should be able to,weather your 15(as we all did and turned out fine)or 150,as long as who we are watching are doing it infree will, mutally agreed and most important, well over the age of 18.
Can somone explain to me how a 15yo watching a recorded porno movie puts him or her in any form of danger of running into a pediphile?? We all here I'm suure go on reg porn sites and see how there set up,how could a minor possibly run into thease sickos?? Is it me or does it seem virtually impossible.3 things in our country that our goverment says no to minors to-cigarettes(wich can kil you),alcahol(wich can kill you too)and pornography(witch ca....hey what can it do?)....nuff said

I heard on radio news recently U.S. law enforcement is considering asking ISP's to keep history records for all users for a period of two years, supposeably to track child porn users. Every time a brutal crime against a child hits the news, it creates an opportunity for big brother to expand his reach. People are so busy screaming about terrorists having their phone calls tracked, they don't see the G Man walking right in their own back door.
