My budget was really tight and needed to get the lawn done. Purchased a Push Reel Mower from Bunnings (Australia & New Zealands version of Home Depot).
My earliest memory of one was when I was about 4 or 5 years old. My Grandfather had one in his garage. It was heavy, I remember I could pull it but never push it. (Fast forwad back to the present) when I lifted the box for the first time of the one I bought, I was surprised on how light it was. After getting it home and putting it together, wasn't expecting much. But amazingling it far exceeded my expectations (which is always a good thing). Not too good on the long grass but a few pushes over it chews through it quite easily.
I'd say compared to a standard 2/4 stroke petrol mower (which of course is far superior), I'd say the push-reel mower takes about twice the time and 75% quality of cut but dirt cheap. I don't have a large lawn so took about an hour. Should have enough for a petrol mower in a few weeks and a whipper snipper (americans call weed wacker).

My parents had an antique reel mower i used to play with, and i thought it cut a bit better than the gas powered mowers. Ive got a few acres to cut and with a ride on tractor and a 46" deck, it still takes 2 hours, without trimming.

I have .25 acre lot and I use a 22" mulching pushmower to get the job done.
I recently bought a new edger which is powered by a rechargeable lithium battery that also had a clippings blower included in a packaged deal. For my smaller yard I can edge, and blow the clippings on the charge of the one battery. Something I picked up at Sears.
Never had tried the manual push mower before, but would be interested in playing around with one.

DUUUUUUDE! A friggen Kiwi was in my store just the other day. He was here on holiday and was leaving the US to head to Paris, France. We only got to talk for a couple of moments before he headed out. I should've asked if he knew anyone back home named Footlongsubzero.
