with facebook, i've found and reconnected with many friends from my past but i have also discovered a few people i knew have passed away. i'm only in my (late) 30's so it's a suprise when i catch one. one was a guy i knew i college whom i shared a studio class with. smart guy, great attitude, and always could make people smile. he died about 6 years ago of intestinal cancer after fighting it for years. only 3 weeks ago, i learned that girl i knew in high school died from H1N1 flu over the course of 3 days. i saw her at my HS reunion in november but never got a chance to say hi. i read she left behind a husband and 2 kids, 3 and 5.

the one that hit me the hardest tho was a really good friend i had in middle school and into freshman year in HS. we lived in different towns but got to know each other thru the church our parents dragged us to. i spent alot of weekends at his place and he was a really good guy. i introduced him to my circle of friends and he fit right in as well as matching him up with a girl that i was good friends with. his sophomore year, he moved away to another state and being that this was before the internet was anything, we lost touch. his name popped into my head last week so i searched for him. i found a page on facebook dedicated to him. i thought i had the wrong guy but the more i looked into it, i realized that my good friend was on the 105th floor of the WTC in the first tower that got hit. it sounds like he died instantly and never even saw it coming. thankfully, he didnt have kids but did have a girlfriend as well as his parents and brother and sister he left behind. even as i sit here now writing about this, it affects me. how odd is it that the death of a guy i hadnt seen in over 20 years makes me emotional. i think part of it was cause i expected to find him with kids and a family and being his happy self, but got hit upside the head with his death.. which happened almost 10 years ago.

I'm very sorry buddy to hear of your loss. I don't think it's weird at all that you mourn him. I think a part of it to is the knowledge that life is fleeting and it could have been you. You sort of realize your mortality.

I too am sorry to hear of the loss. Even though many of us were stunned beyond belief on that day, for many of us, the closest we got to that was our television sets. To actually know someone who was lost just makes it hit close to home. A former good friend minding his business and trying to earn a living and he pays the price with his life for terrorism, religious and political issues. It's not fair at all.

You have my genuine sympathy. When people drift away from us, we tend to think that they've gone off to live a life of "happily ever after". It is a blow to find out that this didn't really happen for them.
