I really loved the Stargate movie from years ago with Kurt Russel. However, seeing scenes from the television shows that followed, I can't say as much for them. I found them to have a cheese factor to them that I couldn't get past. Hell, I love the cheese factor of the Star Trek Original Series that I've been watching on Blu Ray lately, but with Stargate, it just didn't interest me.

Well, the other day someone told me of something they read that was calling the new SG-U (Stargate Universe) the new Battlestar Galactica. Now for all of you out of the loop, they're not comparing it to the old 70s or 80s Galactica, but the one that just wrapped up. Having been a huge fan of this new Galatica series I checked this SG-U pilot episode out on onDemand last night and it drew me in. It drew me in so much that I watched all 5 episodes that were listed.

Anyone else into this show?

Patrick

I'm trying to get into it.

This series is considerably different from SG-1 or SG Atlantis; some episodes were lighter than others, while others carried the more serious underlying themes (e.g. the fate of the galaxy) along. I enjoyed the original movie but for different reasons and I liked what the series did with the premise.

SG-U is a little heavy for me. Everything is so serious. I like a little fun in my programs. We'll see how I feel about it with coming episodes.

Toetapper,

Did you try the Battlestar Galatica series? I know that was very serious and pretty much a modern drama, dealing with all kinds of present day issues. I thought it was one of the most compelling shows I've ever watched.

Sadly, I was never around to watch it and it was one I really wanted to watch and follow. So many people have told me about it and how much they enjoyed it. I despaired that I might never catch-up.

The sons of my girlfriend are HUGE fans of the series (they go to the conventions to meet the stars, have built a Pyramid court, etc.). As fortune will have it, they have everything on DVD, so I have a chance to get a thorough acquaintance with the series. Now, if I can only find the time to sit down and watch it (this transition from bachelorhood to domesticity is time-consuming and takes a lot of work).

I don't mind a serious program at all (my favorite program is Law & Order and its spin-offs - not a whole lot of yucks there). I guess that it is just not what I was expecting and accustomed to.

The first time I saw Battlestar Galactica (the new series) it was on television and my father was watching it. There was a hot sex scene and some major drama going on in the next scene. I asked what the show was and he told me, Battlestar Galactica. It was about 2 shows in on the second season at the time. He had the pilot episode and first season on DVD. I watched the pilot and was instantly hooked. I needed to know what was going to happen next and kept watching. I think that weekend I watched every episode of the first season and saw the second season ones on onDemand and caught up.
