As everybody knows, the venerable Image Shack has made some changes. I feel strongly that these guys have been performing a great public service up until now and have no problems whatsoever with the changes they are making.

However - I can't really live with the "no hotlinking" policies, at least where they affect the ability to post photos in forums.

Looking around, I found a site called Photobucket. I'm sure everybody here already knows about it. I signed up for the complimentary account which gives you twenty-five megabytes of free storage.

Looking a little further into Photobucket, I see where the Premium (upgrade) account is only twenty-five dollars per year. That ups your capacity to a full gigabyte. This seems very fair to me! That's just two dollars a month and I think it's a generous offer.

At two dollars a month, I can cover that cost by forfeiting just one latte' or one burger somewhere just once during the month. A candy bar of two.

If there are any Photobucket users with input as to their reliability, I'd like to hear about them from a subscriber's standpoint. On the surface, it looks great.

I ve got the free account 25 MB limit. Very flexible, very easy to use, reliable at any time you want to post pictures elsewhere. The links simpoly do not fail you! It has many options inside, like Slideshow, 3 options of URL, IMG, post tags and the most fascinating thing is "ALL photos" options where you have all in one big text to post your photos in the Internet.
I m pleased with the free account (it has password options and available post "outside" yes/no option.
All in all, a great hosting site for pictures and albums.

Hello Gimme -

Thank you for the input and information on Photobucket. Looks like a great choice to me. I think I will go ahead and fork over the $25.00 for a full year.

one thing i noticed about photobucket some time ago was the bandwith limit for your pictures. lets say you post really great pics, popular ones etc, then after a few hours or a couple of days the image will be gone due to bandwith limit reasons. i dont know if that still happens

That's something I just found out about. Logged in a few minutes ago and started looking around, uploading images, etc. It's a great feature. I notice they also have a "direct-to-blog" publishing characteristic, some other thoughtful bonus features such as the "HTML practice board".

I also use Photobucket and I´m really happy with it. I made mayself two free accounts, so I have quite a big bandwidth --- I´ll probably make third one soon, because "You" is right. When you post on The Mousepad, bandwidth usually reaches a limit in a few days.
Only drawback of the free account is that the files may not be larger than 250KB.
Ben, do you know how large they may be when buying a full account for $25 ?

Cheers,
-Hal-

Hello Hal -

I upgraded to the premium account with Photobucket. You go up from 250k to one megabyte per file and from 1.5gb bandwidth to "unmetered" bandwidth.

The premium account will solve problems of running out of bandwith, at least on the surface of things this would seem to be so. I'll make sure to let you know if "unmetered" turns out to be something less.

For the moment, everything looks great and I feel like it is a fair price for a good product.

I just posted a couple of photos in the Photo section, using my new Photobucket account. This IS a great alternative to Image Shack and I'm thankful for the great advice I got in these forums.
