That is if you're a gamer, and more importantly a fan of 2D fighters. Not only are we going to get King of Fighters XI for the PS2 next month (release date 10/2/07, and $15 brand new is practically giving it away, so be there or be square) but by October 25th we'll also get Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, also for the PS2, and at a measly lil' ol' $15 price! [Woot]

Anybody else stoked up for these releases? [Joint]

King of Fighters XI, damn there up to that many. My bro will probably pick it up. I'll play it here and there, I think its an alright fighter.

Check out this sample video of KOF XI. In particular, look at that first guy out there...the dude in the suit. That's a new guy named Oswald, and he uses a deck of playing cards to fight. Can you say bad ass?! This game is going to rock on so many levels...I can't wait to get a hold of it! [Drool] [Woot]

I love 2D fighters. I'm still playing Street Fighter 2 and Capcom vs SNK 2. Definately will look out for those two games.

Please do Bro...you're gonna love 'em! [Thumbs Up]

I've been a Neo Geo fighting game fan from day one, and have been playing King of Fighters since it started way back in '94. I like all kinds of fighting games, but once you get into KOF there's no turning back. The characters will rope you in, and the intense gameplay will keep you begging for more! You'd be hardpressed to find another fighting game that can match the speed and intensity of KOF. [Cool]

Speaking of which, here's a video clip taken from a KOF XI tournament held in Korea. This Pungko guy listed as one of the players seems to be pretty legendary (at least around Youtube). He's playing Kyo, Iori, and Shen, versus a guy named BanGyouk, who is playing Ash, Jyazu, and Eiji. Sorry for the shaky picture quality, but this Pungko guy pulls a comeback that you just have to see to believe!
One helluva comeback!

Hope that whets your appetite for a good fighting game. And if you want to know more about KOF XI, here's the wikipedia article that should help you get up to speed on all these characters.

Oh, and an additional note about this topic. The release of KOF XI got pushed back until the end of the month. Why? I have no idea, but I hope the reasons are good...they better be good anyway. I was so stoked up for this game, and if there were any justice I'd be melting my eyeballs on it right now. Oh well...good things to those who wait I suppose. [Joint]

Amen to that! Ralf and Clark kick some major ass, even if they have a little bit of a learning curve being the grapplers that they are (Clark especially). Leona and Heidern are awesome too...I just wish they had made the cut to KOF XI. I'll be happy getting to play as Ralf and Clark this time out, but I'm gonna miss Leona, and Heidern hasn't been a playable character since 2001! Instead we get Whip rounding out the Ikari Team...and I guess she's alright, but I never could get into playing her.

Posted by Salvy_Mic (Member # 13384) on :

Yeah, Whip isn't the same as having Leona, or even Heidern for any of us who want to go way back when. I dunno, but that team has always been pretty intuitive for me. I've never bothered with making custom teams, my strongest characters have always been Ralf, Clark, and Leona. So, for anyone who gets it...Ninmu Kanryu!

Yeah, Leona's always been a strong character for me...I've liked her since they introduced her in '96. As for Ralf and Clark, I'm usually pretty good with Ralf, but it's Clark that I take my spells with. Either I can really kick ass with Clark, or I suck with Clark. I guess I have to be "in the groove" before using him, I can't go up and "casually" play him and hope to get anywhere.

So do you like any other characters besides the Ikari Warriors? I like a whole lot of the characters, but if I really want to stomp some ass and not waste a bunch of time doing it, give me Ryo Sakazaki! Another strong character for me is Joe Higashi.

I'm really looking forward to getting to play as Duck King too. I always kicked ass with him the Real Bout series, and I hope they keep all his moves in the transfer to KOF.

As for the new characters, I have a strong feeling that I'm going to LOVE Momoko and Oswald.

Man I wish this game would hurry up and get here! [Woot] [Hop]

Can't forget about Neo Geo Battle Coliseum either! That's gonna be a good one too! Check out this clip of three matches back to back. Looks like this game is going to be an intense one! [Thumbs Up]

I've usually been pretty good with the likes of the entire Kyokugen team (Ryo, Robert, Yuri, and Takuma), King, Blue Mary, and of course, everyone and their mother knows how to use Kyo, Mai, Iori, and Terry. I always wanted to get good with Vanessa though.

Posted by Lou Gojira (Member # 983) on :

You're good with Blue Mary?! Damn dude...you got my respect. I have always sucked with Blue Mary. I like her, I think she's an interesting character, but I never could get used to her moves.

Vanessa is a sweet character and you're going to have fun playing as her...but in my opinion the best boxer-type character is easily Heavy D. I took to him, Lucky, and Brian instantly in '94, and played the piss out of them in '98, especially Lucky. I wish more folks liked Team U.S.A., maybe they would've made it to more installments.

And yes, I totally agree with you on the Sakazaki Team...especially Takuma, at least before '02 when they seriously powered him down.

Speaking of powering down, it's hard to believe that I used to kick some ass with Chin Gentsai of the Psycho Soldiers. He was a great character until about '01 (or maybe it was '02) when they started having a lot of his moves depend on the sake bottle.

Have you seen some of the things they've done to Sie Kensou in XI? I'm not sure what's up with him, but I've seen a few clips where he had some blue dragon fly down from the sky and go into his chest! I know Bao was parasitically sucking Sie's internal powers in '99 and 2000, so maybe this is his way of getting them back finally.

Yeah, Clark and Mary play somewhat similar to one another, they're both fairly quick, aggressive grapplers who can chain moves together for extra damage. I suppose I'm just rather intuitive with grapplers.

I haven't played KOF in some time though, I'm probably rusty as all hell. I'm not saying I was some sort of world-beater before, but I've always been pretty formidable for a guy that doesn't get to play much. That's really how its always gone for me in any fighting game I play, I'll give anyone a tough fight, no matter how good they are, but more often than not, I tend to lose because all the guys I play are much better than myself.

Once upon a time though, I used to be unrivaled with Xianghua in SC2 when it came out, I was about as unorthodox as you can get...before everyone else went straight to the 'net to figure out the absolute best way to play their respective characters. I myself have always played by ear and figured shit out for myself, which is probably why other players tend to improve faster than me.

Well, about the only big change in play mechanics you'll have to keep in mind when you play KOF XI is that a fifth button has been added...and that one extra button serves as a knock down. It's been C&D all these years (except for 2003 when C&D served as a tag-out), so now it's one button. I don't know about you, but I think that'll be no problem getting used to. [Thumbs Up]

So Blue Mary plays a lot like Clark huh? I might have to start practicing with her again.

I'll tell you a character you simply need to learn, and that is Duo Lon! You talk about combo's and ultimately juggling, this character has been barred from certain tournaments because folks have been exploiting the hell out of him! He's a lot of fun to play; got a lot of cool moves, really wicked SDM's, and has a nice and interesting design to him (sorcery and martial arts mixed). If you don't already have it, go out and pick up KOF 2003 for your PS2 and start practicing, that way you'll get brushed up and slide right into playing KOF XI with no problem. [Thumbs Up]

*edit:
Here's a couple of links to show off how truly awesome Duo Lon can be. Check 'em out!
Oswald, Kula, & B. Jenet -vs- Duo Lon, K', & Duck King

K', Kyo, & Duo Lon -vs- Whip, Adelheid, & Maxima

Oh God, K', Kyo, and Duo Lon? Talk about the ultimate cheap team. I dunno, with me, I've tended to use the characters that aren't the most popular with the elite guys. Hence, the Ikari Team, who I started using way back when in the KOF 94 days. Hardly anyone used them, they all used either Team Japan, Team Italy (Fatal Fury team), Team Mexico (Kyokugen team...especially since I grew up in a Mexican neighborhood), or Team England (the female team).

That's the one thing I wish KOF would bring back, I wish they'd have the teammates on the sidelines cheering the current fighter on and cringing when they get hit. And when they're taken out of action, they're sitting all beat up and dejected in the background. It's not the same anymore.

If any of you guys have a Wii, Art of Fighting, World Heroes and Fatal Fury are now available. I'm going to download these old 2-d fighters this weekend.

Another 2D fighter fan?! And a foot fetishist? Dude. Awesome! I just got the new Guilty Gear not too long ago. Day it came out, in fact. I can't wait for KOF XI, as I've been playing it in the arcades.

Team set up: Iori, K., Kula. Go team.

You've been playing KOF XI in the arcades?! Man, I'm jealous! We don't even have any arcades around this "hickburg" I live in anymore...and even if they did they wouldn't have something cool like a KOF game in it. I don't know...it seems like 2D fighters are steadily going the way of the 2D shooters; only a small but dedicated following will play games that actually take some skill, forethought, and patience to master.

Iori, K', and Kula huh? Damn Bro...you're playing to win! [Thumbs Up]

Don't despair entirely Bro...last I heard KOF '98 is getting a remake! It's going to be the old school KOF rules with 3-on-3 elimination matches, with all the characters and goodies we loved in '98, only they're adding the Boss Team from '96 (Geese, Krauser, and Mr. Big), and another team consisting of Kasumi, Eiji, and I think Orochi...or maybe it's Goenitz...I'm not totally sure about the third person, but hey, it's '98, one of the best KOF's ever made, and we're going to get to enjoy it all over again! [Thumbs Up]

Out of those three classic 2D fighters, do you have any that you'd consider a favorite? [Smile]

Yeah, despite not having any sort of storyline, KOF '98 was clearly the best of the old-school KOFs, before they changed developers, artwork, and added strikers to the mix. And even as far as storylines go, I still think the Rugal/Orochi storyline was the best ever, between '94 and '97. I do love that asides from the typical heroes team, the only other team that always factors into the main storyline is in fact the Ikari team.

I'm a street fighter guy for life. If I had to pick out of those 3 though, it would be Fatal Fury. Hopefully, they'll bring Fatal Fury 2 to the Wii. I liked that one much better.

Keep in mind Bro, that in a very technical sense, the Ikari Warriors could be considered the heroes of KOF each time out. Ralf and Clark were SNK's first popular video game characters afterall, so I think it's only right that they play an integral part in the storyline no matter which direction it goes.

Something I wanted to mention, in case you're not aware of it, is that the 3-on-3 elimination matches are still available in KOF 2003. All you have to do is select "Team Play" instead of "Arcade" at the start-up, and you're playing old school KOF once again. No Strikers, the stage cycles through time changes...it's pretty sweet. Of course the other team mates are still absent from the backgrounds, but you can still play KOF the classic way on the home version. [Smile]

Hmmm...that's interesting how they're bringing out part 1 by itself. On the PS2 you can get Fatal Fury Battle Archives, and that one disk includes part 1, part 2, Special, and part 3. If you've got a PS2 you might want to look in on that. [Thumbs Up]

Personally, I'm hoping they'll bring out a bundle of the Real Bout series. The first Real Bout Fatal Fury remains one of my all-time favorite 2D fighters to this day.

Since you're a fan of that series, did you ever get to play Garou -Mark of the Wolves? Talk about a major overhaul to the Fatal Fury franchise...jeez! It was a sweet game though, and it brought in some very cool characters, especially Rock Howard, Griffon, and Butt. [Cool]
