To me this dude's (Funkyman) guitaring is really really good and this track gives me goose bumbs... Can anyone direct me to stuff like this in songs or on it's own... I digged the guitar solo by Slash in November Rain - Guns N' Roses...

Listen to the solos of David Gilmore (Pink Floyd) on Confortably Numb, a song on The Wall and Brian May may (scuse the pun) also be a safe bet. If you like it somewhat rougher, listen to Jeff Waters of Annihilator on the album Neverland, specially the song imperiled eyes.
Cheers [Wink]

Just heard Comfortably Numb for the first time and the David Gilmore solo is MADD!! luved it... Didn't really get into Floyd's stuff back in the day..

Brian May's pretty good as I looked up a lil' bit of his stuff on youtube and digged "Last Horizon" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpMZ2IRsLOA ....

Heavier? "Imperiled Eyes" Awesome guitar solo but the song was a lil' too heavy for me at this point... I'll get there it's that since I've played guitar hero III that I've just got my feet wet in the rock side of things... Once this song played, felt like starting a mosh in my own room... lol

Thanks alot for these... AWESOME!!!! keep em' commin' [Big Grin] ...please

P.S about to check out these other suggestions [Thumbs Up]

Robert Fripp of King Crimson can make his guitar sing with lots of emotion even though he is not capable of showing human emotion himself! [Big Grin]

Try this old demonstration of "Fripptronics" from '79

Try to keep up with these complex time signatures on your "guitar hero" kiddies...

I'm intrigued that all this music is totally new to you. Have you been exclusively listening to rap music for a while now?

Here's a guy just a stone's toss across from you in Australia. The John Butler Trio is his band and the dude plays crazy stuff on his 12 string acoustic guitar. Think of Jimi Hendrix meets The Red Hot Chili Peppers and that kind of describes his stuff.

Primus... They're like a trip in an audio track. Sorta funky. Seems like they we're all wasted during jam session and just recorded everything and then woke up in the morning and took the stuff that could work and chucked them together.... The guitaring was good but just a lil' drowned out by the lead bass. Seems you have to be wasted to really dig into them... I'll try again when I'm drunk [Smile]

I've got alot of their albums on CD, but its getting harder to find some as they seem to be going out of print. A friend of mine has them all and got to see them perform the last time they played in the US. I think what is the most interesting about them is that their music completely changes every few years. I guess that would've also been due to the rotating door of musicians that were in the band early on. The most recent stuff I heard from 2003 sounded like progressive metal in the vein of bands like Dream Theater which they were a big influence on.

Yeah... I was bought up in a house of disco and pop til I was about 6 when disco was phased out. My older bro was into rock but didn't hear much of his stuff due to older sisters hogging the family stereo. So my ears were in tune with mainstream soft rock, pop and disco...

Got into alot of mainstream 80's music from when I was 8 (NZ eg. David Bowie, Frakie Goes To Holywood, Duran Duran, Michael Jackson, Billy Idol just to name a few) til my early teens RAP, Hip-Hop and R&B in the 90s.

I looked at Hard Rock/Heavy Metal music as RUBBISH as the guitaring was just a noisy racket "Bala wala wala wala..... AHHHHH SHUT UP ALREADY!!!!"... With a minority (around 20% of High school) were "Head-Bangers" we would refer to them as BOGANS...

Now after playing and getting into the game GUITAR HERO III.... (which I picked up Dec of last year), [Eek!] I just SAW THE LIGHT!!! [Eek!] I hear songs differently now... The guitar actually speaks and now realizing that it has a language, could even say it's rich enough to have it's own culture.... Guitar solos are pretty deep....

Eg. I was in the video store a few days ago and they were playing an old Michael Jackson music video BEAT-IT.... I really really digged the guitar solo which I really heard for the first time. I've heard BEAT-IT more than 100times but this is like the first time I acutally paid attention to the solo and DAYYYYMNNNN it was awesome... Did a bit of reasearch and found out it was Van Halen... Never heard of his stuff, only heard of his name in a few movies (Back To The Future where a track was used as a toturing tool, and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure where they praised him).

So now my ears are pretty much in tune with the guitaring and now I'm pretty new to the scnene.... I'm only 2mths old [Tongue]

the chapman is basically a hunk of wood with strings,
instead of struming the strings
you tap em like a piano
its very hard to learn

Hard for me to guess if it is the rhythm, the style, the melodic nature, or just the sound that drew your attention to this.

I'm just a teacher. I'd like to know where it is you want to go with this. Probably can help you, at least a little.

There are a couple good suggestions provided above but I have given it some thought and have some other ones for you, especially if you are thinking strictly instrumental music:

For contemprary performances, Joe Satriani, from the CD entitled "Is There Love in Space?", try the title track - very haunting, starts dreary in minor keys and then blossoms into Major 7ths - and the track that follows, "I Could Fly" - just a joyous rock march. The entire album is superb and, for many of us mere mortals a lesson in all the things that we'll never be able to do on a guitar.

Since you seem to lack a history of rock, try anything by Larry Carlton; you'll probably want to focus more on his earlier work as that is still "required reading at the academy" for rock. Later on, he incorporates many elements of jazz. Search him on Youtube but I'd suggest that you buy a few of his CD's which are instrumental.

Anything by Lee Ritenour or Steve Lukather (Toto) will be instructive.

For a Blues oriented rock sound, nobody beats Robben Ford. I highly recommend his album (on CD) "Talk to Your Daughter". There are several gems on it especially his take on an old blues tune "Revelation" which is an up-tempo guitar sermon that will have you shouting 'Hallelujah!' by the final chorus. Haven't looked lately but I'm sure he can be found on Youtube, as well.

Keep in mind that these last 4 players are improvisers. Very rarely do they plan a song beyond the basic chord scheme and instrumentation. Very few solos are rehearsed. Once, during an interview, Larry Carlton was quoted as saying that he thought that Jimmy Page's solo in "Whole Lotta Love" was the greatest rock solo that he'd ever heard until he found out that is was practiced and rehearsed, then, not so much.

I understand that these names are unfamiliar to you and it would be easy to skip over them but I assume you are trying to expand your musical view. This would be a very good place to start.
