Just curious to read what you all think were some of the best fighting games out there on the consoles. I know a lot of Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Street Fighters, etc. will make the list. I'm going to go with a game I fell in love with at a bowling alley where I used to bowl. It's called Samurai Shodown and it was for the Neo Geo. It did come out in a really crappy SNES release, but I also found it and a Panasonic 3D0 system at a small used video game shop. Since the system was one of the first 32 bit systems, I bought both and for a really good price. Anyone else enjoy this game? I hear they're releasing a next gen version with a number of it's lesser known sequels. Might have to pick that up!

Here's a YouTube link to a Neo Geo gameplay of this game too:

Well although I only played the demo(XBOX 360 Version) UFC 2009 Undisputed seems to take the cake so far.

I mean yes the "classics" such as Street Fighter and the Mortal Kombat games are just simply amazing due to nostalgic value [Big Grin]

I remember Samarai Showdown, but never got into it. I was all about Street Fighter then and now. My favorite is Street Fighter II Champion Edition and Street Fighter III. Street Fighter IV is good but I prefer the others. My favorite 3-d fighters are Virtua Fighter IV and Tekken 5.

I used to love Fatal Fury 1 and 2. But I popped them back in the Sega Genesis a few months ago and realized they're not as good as I thought they were. Yes, I still have a Genesis and it works. Played Super Thunderblade on it a few weeks ago.

There will be a new Fatal Fury coming out this year for the PS3 and 360.

i'm with you on that...mortal kombat 2 consumed the most hours in my life, by far, out of any fighting game.

and now i REALLY want to play it.

I enjoyed Mortal Kombat 1 and 2, but it was too basic for me. Best thing about it was the fatalities. Street Fighter series had combos that depended on your distance which made it more entertaining than Mortal Kombat. Now, the newer Mortal Kombat, Deadly Alliance, that game is great. Crazy combos and fatalities. I haven't played Mk vs DC Universe but it looks good.

Street Fighter=best 2d fighting series

mortal kombat 3 had combos, i liked street fighter but as a kid i felt like it was the game kids played because their parents wouldn't let them play mortal kombat

what made mortal kombat 2 so great was the blood and fatalities, at the time i couldn't believe they put that in video games, i think it started the blood and gore we see in games today

nowadays it's commonplace, video game characters even use the word "fuck"

I was never into martial-arts fighting games but I loved playing "Golden Axe" with the two-player feature.
It only had a limited amount of moves but some of them were quite cool -- for example the backwards kick, the magic weapons or riding the dragons. [Wink]

Smash Bros Melee or Brawl. Misleadingly deep games, and I'm a fighting game aficionado.

My first ever fighting game I really got my teeth into when I was about 7 was Double Dragon. Used to play it at the laundry-mat when mum would do the washing/drying.

Was greatly dissapointed when I got it on Atari...lol with square heads and stick bodies [Laugh]

Another shortly after that was Final Fight
 -

And a few more followed; Golden Axe, WWF Superstars, WWF Wrestle FestWrestle War, WWF Wrestlemania Arcade Game

1 on 1 Fighting Games....
For me the original "Street Fighter" didn't quite kick me into fighting games but once "Street Fighter II" came out, I was full on into it. My fave outta the series would be Street Fighter II - Champion Edition (Rainbow Set 2) [Laugh] cheat version where you could send 10 slow-mo 'SONIC-BOOM's' in one screen and when the first one hits the opponent you send a few fast ones, leaves no chance for a comeback.... plus you could change during mid play by hitting the Player1 start button.

I hear ya. I used to do the same. Although my fave player was Sub-Zero (Obviously [Big Grin] ) , I liked using Shang-Tsung and use his morphing capabilities. Back then I memorised all morphing sequences plus the fatalities, friendships and babalities. I don't really remember them anymore lol...

They had a version come out on Sega Mega-Drive (aka Genesis). In New Zealand, it was released without the blood and gorey fatalaties. Thankfully they had gaming magazines which told you how to unlock it and alothough the graphics weren't great (lookin' back on it now), it did pretty good job in satisfying me at that time.

^ Yes, Double Dragon was fun...I remember playing that with a friend every day in an arcade-hall on a vacation in Italy. [Wink]

Double Dragon is a classic. I played the hell out of that game.

I think my favorite arcade co-op play fighting gane has to be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I spent so much of my dads money on that. He'd give me $5.00 and I'd get it all worth of quarters and put it in my pocket. Head over to the game and play until I had maybe .50 left to play something different. Someone would always join and we'd have all four players and just whoop ass.

I loved Golden Axe too Hal.

I remember playing MK 1 & 2 all the time at the arcade and when I bought a Super Nintendo. The funniest memory of those games was me having my ass handed to me by an 8 year old girl on Mortal Kombat. I should've pushed her down and taken all her quarters for that...

I loved the hell out of Final Fight. It's one of my absolute favorite games of all time, and the game that made me fall in love with beat-em-ups in general. I've also gotta say I'm a huge KOF fan.

Best part of Golden Axe was when the little gnome would run onto the screen with the bag of goodies and you could kick the living shit out of him and steal all his stuff!

^ Yeah, those annoying twits were quite a cool idea.

That reminds me of an old C64/Amiga game called Barbarian. Not sure if you guys ever played it but when you beheaded your opponent a troll would come, drag away the dead body and kick the head out of the screen like a football. [Laugh]

There was also quite a lot of fuss those days about the lady on the cover of the gamebox. [Wink]

She was a Page 3 girl here in the UK. Her name is Maria Whittaker and the Barbarian is Michael Van Wijk also widely known in the UK as Wolf of Gladiators fame.
