Ditto for me! We had our poor sick old dog put down last year and got a new kitten a few months ago.

A yellow Budgie - Was drowning at a beach we were at last summer, saw it struggling in the water. Brought it onto the beach to dry out it's wings but looked really sick and stumbled around and couldn't fly. Felt sorry for it, so packed up all our stuff to take it to the vet. Had to fork out $70 (Grrrrrr) and though we brought it home, looked like it was gonna die.

After a few days, it started to chirp n' sing in it's makeshift washing basket cage. Bought a cheap bird cage via TradeMe (that's E-Bay for New Zealanders) and the rest is history. She's part of the family now [Big Grin]
