Catholic priest convicted of abusing Md. altar boy July 13, 2009 5:45 PM EDT
ROCKVILLE, Md. - A Roman Catholic priest has been convicted of sexually abusing an altar boy at a Germantown church more than seven years ago.
The Rev. Aaron Cote (koh-TAY') is expected to be sentenced Oct. 14 to 10 years of probation. The former part-time youth minister at Mother Seton parish also must register as a sex offender under a plea agreement announced Monday.
Cote was convicted of a third-degree sex offense. He pleaded not guilty and was convicted by a Montgomery County Circuit Court judge, who heard a recitation of undisputed facts.
The 57-year-old priest, who now lives in New York City, reached a $1.2 million settlement two years ago with the victim. The former altar boy claimed Cote had repeatedly molested him from June 2001 until June 2002.
I'm extremely pissed off that all this pervert gets is probation because he's a priest. What makes him so friggin' special??? It doesn't matter what your job title is "You keep your freakin' hands off kids!!!!" Anybody else would be spending at least ten years living the worst kind of hell on earth imaginable. A child molester is the worst thing you can be in prison, and that's where this clown should be.

As sick as I think this is, I think this happens in other churches/religions just as much but they for 1 hide it better and don't have the media blasting it all over the place a for 2 people know that the catholic church has money, so they can "get rich quick". Of coarse this doesn't make this sick act any less disturbing.

It's a Catholic "trend" due to them not being allowed to like...do anything sexual if they are men of the cloth. The way they see it is it doesn't say you can't in the bible directly, so that's their "avenue". That and like how when some guys go to jail, they turn gay due to not seeing any women for ages and being around men - these guys are around the boys all the time.
(If someone makes the assumption that I'm making excuses for them or am on their "side" I'll get annoyed - it's just an explanation for something inexplicable.)

I would never say that you were taking their side. My whole reason for posting the story is: Why do they (priests) get preferential treatment? A child molester is a child molester no matter his or her chosen vocation. Priests have been doing this for eons. They've convicted over and over again. Why haven't they been subjected to the same punishments as all others??? This protection by the church has to stop!! This is one of many reasons that I cannot support organized religion. It's all a farce.

100% agreed - I've always felt that religion are synonymous with cults. They brainwash you into believing *their* version of events and give you rules and guidelines to follow...like giving their church/mosque/temple/whatever money Scientology being the most extreme I suppose...
And I didn't get that you were asking WHY they get preferential treatment; yeah I don't know...they really shouldn't.

Reading about the Church of Scientology, their practices, their history, their origins, and their scandals, is a mind-bending experience. I think L. Ron Hubbard was one of the most fascinating figures of the 20th century.

I was an altar boy for my church back when I was about 10 or 12 years old and not once did a priest make an advance on me or any of the others...when we 'got changed' in the back room it was simply throwing the robe over our church clothes...some of the stories that are coming out about the molestations involve the altar boys getting undressed...not to mention in the back room with us was the other members of the mass preparing as well.
Why don't the other Catholic churches do this?

I agree that they should be prosecuted as any child molester and the church shouldn't protect them, but I still say that the reason the Catholic church gets so much exposure over this is that people know that the church has alot of money and that the church will pay to keep things quiet (not that that's right either). But this surely happens in other religions just as much, but people won't get rich off of the other religions. And as far as ANY child molester goes, They should be dragged out in the street and shot (priest's included).

This reminds me of something that comedian Carlos Mencina once said. He was talking about how these child molesters should, instead of going to jail, should just have their dicks cut off by a guillotine. The molester will plea, "PLEASE, I WILL NEVER DO THIS AGAIN!" And the executioner will day to him, "You damn right you won't." Then the blade comes down.
That's how they should be put a stop to.
