I never figured out what page & plant meant by that.

He meant:
quote:
Written by Jimmy Page & Robert Plant:
Oh here's to my sweet Satan.
The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is Satan.
He will give those with him 666.
There was a little tool shed where he made us suffer, sad Satan.

[Smile]

haha
nah

A hedgerow being just a hedge that surrounds parks and stuff

A bustle is like a disturbance, a kerfuffle etc (Something that's happened in your life)

So a bustle in your hedgerow is like something (evil as the song IS about you can go to hell if you take the wrong path) that's trying to get you to do wrong.

Spring clean - obviously cleaning that which is dirty (cleaning your soul in terms of the song I'd say). Saying that temptation is a necessary evil of life.

May Queen according to the internet (I don't know so I looked it up) - The May Queen was a maiden chosen by a village to represent the hopes and potential for the coming year. She was a symbol of beauty, spring and new beginnings.

That...or apparently the hedgerow is pubic hair and to get a bustle in it is to get aroused.

The final interpretation of this is one clearly a very able scholar came up with...it can mean a fanny fart.

Do you reckon it was purposely backmasked?

I change my opinion every time I think about it, but the facts are A LOT of it when played backwards is semi-dechiperable - not overly common in most songs.

The backmasked message is basically the "Stairway To Hell".

However, they always denied doing it...

I don't like how it's got such a bad rep...I mean if you actually stop getting a hard-on over how they say "Satan" and ooh that's a bad word or whatever, and actually listen to what's supposedly said...they're saying Satan is a dick basically.
"The one whose little path would make me sad"
"There was a little tool shed where he made us suffer, sad Satan."

Ok, I'm done for now [Smile]

Good observation. I remember back in the 80's the whole backwards masking thing. I tried it with Zep 4 & couldn't spot any satanic messages.

When was "Stairway to heaven" recorded? Like 1971? I don't believe those young fellas were interested in "backwards" stuff. They just wanted to make a great record, and if you listen to the drums (and general recording) on that track you'll find that it is impeccable to this day.

There's actually a few songs that have obvious intentional backwards masking on them. On the Pink Floyd song "Empty Spaces" from the wall there is a one that basically says,

"Congratulations, you have found the secret message. Please send your answer to ol' Pink, care of the funny farm."

A friend of mine had the vinyl album back in the day and we spun it backwards to hear the message.

Well, that's another piece of evidence saying it WAS purposely backmasked actually...I mean, the line I have started this post with is exactly where the backmasked message ends (begins I suppose, as when it's played, it's played backwards), and just listen to how the druming pattern and particularly the singing/guitar rhythm changes...I'm not particularly musically minded so I'm finding it hard to explain what to listen for, but you will get it if you listen to that bit. The number of syllables and all sorts in the verse change and he - I can't think of a good way to describe this - "twangs" his voice on the words "May Queen" for one...

Also...it seems almost a cop-out to mention but...he is using very obscure language after that...

I am surprised that there is no well-known software, available cheaply or for free (at least, that I know of) that one can use to play mp3 format songs backward and listen to stuff like this. I'd be using it all night long on all sorts of old stuff!

Does anyone know of any programs for doing this? Please report.

If you do a search on YouTube for backwards masking some people have already done that for you. You can find almost any song with alleged backwards masking on there. Even Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" had the bit that goes:

"Its fun to smoke marijuana."

At least that's what everyone thought it said when I was a kid.

I remember that claim.

I also remember that even as a kid, I thought it was idiotic when people suggested that stuff recorded backward could somehow influence a person subconsciously when played forward. I mean, think about it: if you are listening to it forward, you're not hearing the message--at all!
