I figure just about everyone these days uses an MP3 player whether its a personal one or on their computers. One question is do you get most of your media from purchasing MP3s from legit vendors like iTunes, rip CDs of your own or those you borrow, or do you do the old file transfer through something like Lime Wire.

I've got a pretty large CD collection and I've probably ripped about half of the 1000 or so I own. I've never bought an MP3, but I do hit Lime Wire if I'm looking for a rare out of print song or want to test out something before I buy it. I like the convenience of MP3s as they don't take up a lot of space on the shelves of a storage rack like a CD collection, but if you lose a backup copy from a HD crash then its lost until you either buy or download it again.

I pretty much play my iPod through the home stereo on shuffle when I listen to music with company over rather than grabbing CDs to put in the changer. Many more hours and variety of music without having to get up and load more CDs when you play through 6 discs.

Just wondering what everyone else does.

I bought myself an ipod nano(4GB) back when they first came out and paid about $400 for it. I figure I paid enough to the "music industry". I personally go to torrentz.com and just downloaded some discographys, now if it's a more indie/local band I'll shell out the dollars to help support them.

But I think Metallica can do without my $22 that there missing out on [Smile]

i used to do mp3's, those cheap ass 4gb ones at radioshack next to the iPods. now i just put everything on a external HD (320gb btw) so i can have my Interpol and The Smiths discography next to my Aesthetic Footjob's & Elite Foot Fetish collection [Big Grin]

i havent bought a cd or even an mp3 since about 1995 except maybe an odd one here or there of an artist that really needs the support. i couldnt live without my 80gb ipod. my old one recently died with less than 5 left on it so i am currently re-downloaded music as i come across it. i get 90% of my music from usenet and occasionally use buttoreent. i have also begun backing up all my music on my external HD too (750gb).

Oh yeah, forgot to add I recently updated to an Ipod Touch. Holds about a 1000 songs I believe. Comes in handy at the gym/long drives.

I've been using a variety of random MP3 players (and then iPod since 2003) for years now. Most of my music comes from torrents, not illegally though. My fave genre is very niche so they're not sold in shops or online. Which I suppose is good on the wallet!
The rest comes from my old CDs, friends CDs, family CDs, friends sending me stuff over Messenger.
I'm happy getting stuff from iTunes or eMusic if I have a free voucher. I just wouldn't spend that amount of money on single tracks (which I'm only really interested in).

All my Led Zeppelin (4-5 albums) has been downloaded off of Hi-Quality Youtube clips and converted (using www.keepvid.com and Super AVConverter. (The Youtube to MP3 sites give you shitty quality).

Otherwise my parents generally have all the old stuff I like... [Smile]

I've got a 80 gig iPod about half full & it's my entire Zappa, Yes, VH & Pink Floyd collections including a vast bootleg collection. I do buy music on iTunes, use Acquisition & Lime Wire sometimes.
It doesn't bother me to buy a song or 2 at ¢99 a piece.

Thanks for the link Andy! Just what I needed.

Diamond Johnny, I'm looking at getting one of the 80 gig iPods as well. I have a classic iPod that has 4 gigs which I change out the music on every few weeks.

Sounds like we've got the exact same tastes in music for the most part as well. However I haven't been able to bring myself to rip Zappa's "Thing Fish" as of yet. [Laugh]

I started with mp3s but, being an audiophile, moved into wave files. I have an 80gb ipod- all music is in aac- either burned from purchased or borrowed cessation. One of my hobbies is recording songs off of Pandora, all and roadrunner radio.

Backing up all my Zappa on an external took half a day. Yeah get the 80 or the 120 if you can.

It's temperamental; it does them into FLV and MP4 - the MP4 is under the FLV link and it may take like 15 refresh page-s.

Just picked up an iPod 160GB myself less than an hour ago. In fact I'm currently syncing up my music collection as I'm typing this.
