I wreckon that since the movie industry is so large now than it was back in the 80s & 90s and also with making movies being easier with newer technologies/software and maybe with the assistance of Piracy,,,, there are a whole lot of SHITTY movies out there in mainstream DVD don't you think???.....

Sorta like instead of there being more good flicks, there are the same amout of good flicks as years ago (if not less) and it's watered down in a whole lot of BULLSHIT......

I'm sick of watching crappy movies.

So........ If you've seen any good movies of late, I'd like to know please [Big Grin]

I'm going to see "True Grit" today.

The main problem with movies today is the overuse of technology rather than just having a good and original story. Everything now is a 3D CGI shitfest for the most part.

A few really good movies I've seen in the past year or so that are on DVD I would recommend:

Book of Eli
Shutter Island
Inception

All are a bit more cerebral and not just nonstop mindless action.

I´m also looking forward to True Grit.

This is not a new movie (in fact it is from 1992) but I just watched the brilliant "Unforgiven" a couple of days ago. I can highly recommend it!

Hal, Unforgiven is a great movie that is in my collection. Love just about everything Eastwood did. Grand Torino was also a fantastic Eastwood movie you should catch!

I don't mind when CGI is used to ENHANCE an action or explosive scene as long as it's unoticeable, buuuttttt when it's used excessively that it stands out like a sore thumb, it kills the moment IMO....

Book of Eli 9/10
Shutter Island 7.5/10
Inception 8/10

I've seen these and liked them all [Thumbs Up] ...

Shutter Island in my terms is a mindfucker... Has you second guessing something you were so sure of before hand... In that respect, you should see the movie.....

Triangle 7.5/10 (starring Melissa George, saying that coz there are more than one movie called Triangle or The Triangle)
I think this flick is underrated...

If you liked 'Book Of Eli' then you should like 'Solomon Kane'...

Yes, I also saw Grand Torino ... it was very good.
And I can also recommend "Changeling" (Directed by Clint Eastwood).

I went to watch it in the cinema a couple of years ago (actually, together with one of my foot models [Wink] ) and I hadn`t read anything about it beforehand...and it just blew me away.

I also watched this a while back and was quite surprised at how good it was. It´s a little slow-paced but I really enjoyed it .. it has a surprising twist at the end and I really like Michael Caine as an actor.

The Fighter starring Mark Wahlberg about the real fighter Mickey Ward. Give it a solid 9 out of 10.

As for comedy, you can't go wrong with Super Troopers! Friggin hilarious! Anything by the the Broken Lizard comedy group is great(Puddle Cruiser,Club Dread,BeerFest) [Big Grin]

Kung Fu Hustle. It's a total hour and a half what the fuck moment.

The wife got 'Due Date' the other day, and Its a pretty good comedy. Although the concept does mimic Planes, Trains, and Automobiles; which in my opinion is one of John Candys best ever!

i finally got around to watching The Social Network and i actually really liked it. as much as i heard it trashed zuckerberg, i came out liking him more. sure, he 'borrowed' the idea of FB but he took so much further than the original intention.

I agree with your opening comments FootLong...so many movies that are just pieces of crap.

I was a huge fan of Tron back in the '80s...so when the new movie came out...I thought how fantastic...

Saw it...and I gotta say...big time disappointment...guess they feel to modernise thing but it just sucked...no sense of mystery or wonder...just one silly thing after another...they even screwed up the wild blue & red colors!

A movie I saw from Amazon VoD was the Deliverables. Great movie...really enjoyed it...so if you like the macho 80's action flicks...I recommend it!

Last week came back to this post before I went to the DVD store and rented out "Unforgiven". It's a one week rental and havn't gotten around to seeing it but since it goes back today + my day off... might aswel [Big Grin] Pretty good. Clint Eastwood brings this bad-ass characteristic nature to whatever character he plays.

Formula: Clint Eastwood = Legend

Unforgiven: 6.5/10

I didn't realize that the movie 300 was a remake until an old work buddy of mine said so and had it on DVD. He lent it to me "The 300 Spartans". Wasn't expecting anythin' special as effects back then (being a 1962 flick) would'nt be anywhere near todays technology. All in all I thought it would be an old fuddy-duddy movie for old folk. [Big Grin]

I was surprised and really liked the film. The characters carried the movie and the amount of people, props etc... used astonished me as today you could just hire a small group of people and with the help of CGI duplicate to fill an entire stadium, but back then...... WOW [Eek!]

The 300 Spartans: 7.5/10

---

The same friend said if I liked that, I'd like "Ben Hur" (1959 flick). Rented it out, Long ass movie but same reaction as The 300 Spartans. Pretty good.

Ben Hur 8/10

The Fourth Kind

Milla Jovovich stars in this chilling thriller based on true events. 8.5 outta 10. It's a MUST SEE.

CONVICTION

Wouldn't even have touched the cover, stumbled on the trailer and thought I'd pick it up while I was at the DVD rental store. Did not regret it for one second. Far exceeded my expectations which makes this an excellent flick to watch with the missus, family members. Pretty powerful.

Rating 9 outta 10

LIMITLESS

Awesome movie. Takes your mind on a weird trip that far exceeds the limits of your thoughts.

Rating 8.5 outta 10. YOU GOTTA SEE THIS ONE [Hop]

Believe it or not - Megamind.

Supposedly for kids (though I don't know what kids of the current generation would get jokes referring to The Karate Kid, for example). Really funny film and a decent cast.

Don't know how long it's been out, but I only just got it.

X-men: First Class really surprised me. I wasn't a fan of the other X-men movies, but this one was really good.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon, I really enjoyed. I just love everything about all of the Transformers movies.

Battle: Los Angeles aka Battle LA

Kick ass movie. I've seen quite a few shitty alien invasion movies and this exceeded my expectations right off the bat. Connection with characters kept me into the movie makin' the action scenes a lil' more intense. Only picked up this DVD at the rental store because others looked a lil' boring or I've seen already AND this had alot of DVDs on display for rent which swayed me a bit towards it.

Battle: Los Angeles
Rating 8/10

Do you like horror? I'm a HUGE horror fan and I've seen some pretty good flicks lately.

1. Apollo 18 (4/5)
I just saw this one in the theatre. It's found footage from a 1970s mission to the Moon. Three astronauts are sent up for some benign sample collection-- or so they think. It's a slow-build, extremely tense and taut film. Lots of close attention to detail and subtle shots make it incredibly unnerving. Certainly not for everyone, but you'll like it if you enjoy the found footage genre.

2. Rec 2 (3/5)
I just got around to seeing the sequel to Rec. Honestly, I prefered Rec 1 over 2-- 1 is overall scarier, although 2 explains a lot of the weird stuff that goes on in 1. Both are worth a watch if you like found footage and/or jump scares. (I have yet to see the American remakes Quarantine 1 and 2.)

3. Let the Right One In (4/5)
Swedish film featuring a young vampire girl as she moves in to a new apartment and befriends the neighbor boy. Again, VERY slow build with lots of artsy/aesthetic shots. Not exactly "scary," but good horror and way better than Twilight. The American version (which I haven't seen) is called Let Me In.

i just saw Let Me In recently and loved it. Chloe Moretz is an awesome little actress and, although i am sure it's not as slow building as the original version, it does build nicely.

speaking of Chloe, i just saw Kick Ass this past weekend and was really surprised. i thought it was some light quirky movie a la Scott Pilgrim. it was really dark and violent. Chloe, at about 10 years old, kills about 100 people and swears like a sailor.

Just seen the movie "Warrior". Fucking AMAZING movie! Its being touted as the "Rocky" of MMA. Really great storyline as well as awesome fight scenes. I went into the movie thinking it was going to be cheesy hollywood crap such as "Never Back Down" but it surprised me by having great acting and a helluva ending. Highly recommend going to see it in theatres! I give this a 10 outtta 10 [Big Grin]

Rodger Dodger.

It's about a chauvinistic copywriter who takes his 16 year-old nephew out on the town womanizing.

This movie is already in my Top Ten of all-time favorites.

Here's the trailer --

Real Steel. Starring Hugh Jackman, this is the BEST MOVIE I'VE SEEN THIS YEAR. Wasn't that interested in seeing it initially but never regretting watching it big screen. Great film for the family. If you havn't seen it, watch it [Hop]

Just saw two movies in the theaters the past few weeks.

Money Ball

 -

The Ide's of March

 -

I prefer these types of movies to the current crop of CGI, 3D, animated or action or 80s era remake shit that seems to be all Hollywood puts out these days.

real steel!?!?!? seriously? i laughed when i saw the ad for it. looks horrendous.

not movies, but better than most movies are the tv series walking dead and american horror story. walking dead is on season 2 and american horror story has just had 2 episodes. both are awesome.

One movie I really enjoyed watching was In Her Skin.

The film is based on the true story of an Australian teen who went missing and was later found to have been murdered by her babysitter. The story is told from the point of view of the parents and also from point of view of the murderer.

Here are the court transcripts from the case:

i actually went to the movies this weekend with the wife and we saw Paranormal Activity 3. i was hoping that it would be ok but was really surprised at how good it was. it was probably the best on of the series. the end was a bit of a let down.. as most horror movies, but overall a solid movie.

Watched "Centurion" the other day. Great movie for having relatively 'nobodys' in it except Olga Kurlenyko. Set back during the Roman rule and expansion into Britain about the 9th legion and one man and a few survivors are left from a ruthless invasion from the Picts(guerilla warfare group) struggle to get away from the Picts.

Best thing to do is to go into watching this movie with low expectations and you will come away liking the movie lol. Its worth a download on a rainy day [Smile]

Yup seriously. I laughed and thought like you when I saw the shorts but got good reviews from a couple friends of mine. Still wasn't expecting much but checked it out anyway, when I went to see it, wasn't dissapointed at all.
