Both sites are awful. Imgur is much better, and as far as I know, they don't really take down images (the feet subreddit on Reddit has quite a few footjob pics hosted on Imgur).

Yes, it's free, and as far as I can tell, you have use as much space as you want. Though you can only view 225 pics in the Images section, but going through your albums lets you see all of them.

Imagebam is awful? That's my go-to image hosting site. I've been using it for years and never had any problems with it. I remember years back when you couldn't upload an image that was more than 3MB. Now the limit is 10MB.
Imagebam is also free and you are allowed unlimited uploads and unlimited downloads. If you register on Imagebam, you have more control over how you organize your galleries. Without registering, all of your thumbnails in your gallerie will be the same size, which is fine if you want to just upload the images in one move and save yourself the time. For organizational freaks like myself, by registering you can make your galleries look more professional.
I have more control of how my galleries will look by dictating how big or small I want each tumbnail to appear when people click on the links to the galleries. There are other benefits to registering, but you get the idea. The only option in where you have to pay them is if you want to become a premium member. It's about 12 dollars a year and you get absolutely zero ads appearing at the top and bottom of your images, faster page loading and improved image viewing, whatever that means.
An alternate to imagebam is imgbox.com. It's a sister site. I'm not too crazy about that site, though. Those who don't like imagebam may like imgbox better, although I don't. They also have a video hosting site, but that's nothing to rave about.

I don't like the pop ups from them. I can't see the pictures sometimes without several popups, and I have 2 popup blockers. If I'm on my iPhone, I can't see the pictures at all. A popup covers the picture and then I get redirected when I try to close the popup.

i dont mind imagevenue, but i've always hated imagebam. they are slow as fuck and their ads kill my PC until i add them to block list in Chrome. imgbox is pretty good and i like imgur too.
i use my own hosting on my site and i have my popups set for 1 pop per user per 24 hrs so hopefully its not too bad.

Bam is so easy though...for mass uploaders like myself. Yeah the popups and ads suck...I agree. F photobucket, who wants to PAY to store digital images, come on!

Imagevenue and Imagebam appeal to uploaders, but are an annoyance to downloaders / viewers, because of the torrent of ads you're bombarded with: it's about 10 ads per image (if not more).
An easy fix is to install the Adblock extension to Google Chrome (found here).
Google's a little invasive when it comes to privacy and tracking, but that add-on alone makes using Chrome worth it.
