Saw the movie 'In Time' again with Justin Timberlake. Awesome concept of time-is-money. So in the movie, time is the currency and people deal wtih everyday life as if were actual money. Now if you boil it down to our money to it's core essence, it's what most people do, trade their time for money. (Clockin + Work 8hrs = $$$) Now in the movie, people can steal time while you're sleeping.

Now my question is, Can you steal time?

This is vague and I think has many answers so please just wondering what you think about it.

Ok, let's say you're paid to do 100 units of something in 8hrs. You've found a way to do 100 units in 7hrs. Now that 1hr you've gained for yourself, you do whatever except working. Would you consider this stealing time also?

I'm also having this discussion with someone else outside the board.

If you are on company time, and not doing company work, then you are stealing [company] time. A manager recently told me, he would love to be able to tell me I did an excellent job, go on upstairs and relax until your shift is over. He said both of us would be out of a job.

Many people who are speed demons at what they do [no items or sales quotas/goals to meet], have learned [the hard way] to put on the brakes, and coast and cruise until it's time to leave. If you are finished with your stuff, and a boss sees you finished early, then you will end up doing someone else's work for the same pay.

Some people have found out how to rig their quotas and goals so as to steal time. Lets use your 100 unit example as an example.

Your company requires 100 unit pulls per hour. Some workers scurry to get their 100 units, which are usually a mixed variety of items. However, a boss can rig it so those same 100 units comprise of 50 units of two items, or even better, 100 units comprised of a single item. The boss sees you pulled your 100 units early, and lets you goof for the remainder of the hour.

That is stealing time. Actually, you make or create time in order to steal it.

Stealing is the taking of something which does not belong to you. A company basically owns you for said 8hrs. If you create or make time for noncompany activity within that 8hrs, then you are taking something which does not belong to you.

The inverse would be you have a day off, which belongs to you. Your company calls you and says you must come to work. You comply, and now, the company has stolen your time, which belonged to you.
