Ok so since I shot the girl whose (very popular) clip I titled "Spanish Aristocratic Soles," I shot that girl two more times -- one in late summer that's so backlit that it's unviewable, and another in early fall of this year, when she was sitting up on the terrace just west of the library (near the statue of Gertrude Stein), watching a photoshoot for a wedding. There were the bride in the full wedding gown, the groom in tails, and the whole rest of the wedding party, and what seemed to be the couple's parents and some photographers and videographers as well. They were near the grill restaurant on the eastern edge of the lawn and so I assumed that's where they were having their wedding reception. We all know how much women love weddings and this girl must have made a bee line directly over there! She watched raptly as they took the photos and made the video, and chatting with a friend on the phone mostly the whole time. She sat for about 25 minutes with her big, well-worn size 10 turquoise flats off and her very long, shapely bare feet up on a chair.
The problem for me was, I had to sit on the ledge of that little lawn area to shoot her at my preferred angle. That in and of itself would not have been difficult, and this girl had seen me shoot her two times before, so I suspected that she knew why I was shooting and and didn't seem to care. In fact, I think some girls even like the admiration as long as the guy isn't in their face and doesn't sit there smacking his lips (I'm pretty mellow about this). So no worries on any of that, but the photographers had put their stuff right where I needed to shoot. I was foiled ... but the power of the soles could not be undone -- lol! Yes bare soles are for me what the One Ring is to people in Middle Earth and I had to find a way to get into the spot. The answer was simple -- while the photographer and videographer were focusing on their work, I picked their bags up and moved them about six feet to the right so that I could sit on the ledge. I did it super fast so that it would be less noticeable. This Dominican girl (not Spanish -- more on that later) just sat there and watched me as I walked right in front of her moving the bags over one after the other. I don't know if the photographers noticed me doing it or not, but they didn't come over and yell at me so I was ok! Ha.
I was in the clear and sat down to shoot her soles, which looked GREAT, very long and sexy, and she was sitting just far enough away from the ledge that I could FILL the viewfinder with her bare soles and positing her face to the side so that it was still visible. She looked at the camera about a million times as I shot, just out of curiosity, never with any annoyance or concern. She continued to chat away, occasionally flexing those long tootsies as I captured her foot bottoms on video. It was awesome -- kind of hypnotic. She has a *very* pretty face and is about five foot nine, with really long legs. Now and then the photographers came over and jumped up on the ledge and walked directly over where I was sitting, so unless they are completely clueless they must have seen what was in my viewfinder, but they didn't say or do anything about it. Eventually the girl seemed to get bored or maybe she determined she had to leave -- her call had ended about five minutes before -- and she put her feet down, slipped her long feet in her flats, which looked like banana boats, and left, taking the wrappings from her lunch with her (every time I've ever shot her she's had lunch stuff with her) and off she went, walking off the ledge right past me. It's moments like these that really make me glad I started doing this crazy thing.
This is edited down to about half its original length. Since she's talking, I thought that would be a good way to determine where she's from. I had first guessed she was Spanish, but people pushed back against that, saying she's probably from Latin America. So I asked a friend of mine who is a professor of Latin American Studies (I went to college with her eons ago) to listen to the conversation to see if she could tell where the girl is from. (She knows firsthand that I like feet, believe me, lol.) She listened and eventually said, I'm almost sure she's from the Dominican Republic. By the way, she's quite a lovely child, but she's got huge feet." LOL! So I stand corrected.
