It was one of those rare evenings when the lawn was open and no event was going on, but no much was happening for me, UNTIL I saw her -- sitting near the southeast corner, on the lawn, she was petite and she had such a tiny and adorable face! Long silky hair that cascaded down over one shoulder. And as I rounded the chair her bare feet came into view! Heart attack time. But would her soles be in good shape? I had to get around her to see. I assumed they would be, as she looks so utterly perfect and beautifully groomed and healthy, how could her soles be anything other than PERFECT?
I WAS RIGHT! They were tiny and looked soft and sensitive as a baby's bottom. She was reading a YA book and that of course makes her even more precious -- I love these young-at heart girls who are 18 or 19, or maybe in their early 20s, who still read children's books. When I sat down and looked at her bare soles and face, they were not in the ideal position in my viewfinder, so I shimmied over a bit and looked again. I think that's when she noticed that I was shooting, as she shot these very quick looks at the camcorder but then went right back to reading her book. She adorable little feet would flax and wriggle sometimes, and she would now and then reposition them, and if her feet obscured her face I would move again, and she would see me moving and look again! But she never put her feet down or hid them. She didn't make a fuss and didn't seem to really mind -- well who knows, but in any event she left her naked soles right in the line of my camcorder.
I actually took a real chance with all my moving around that she might find it too weird and pull her legs up. I didn't think about it until I was done shooting and sat in the alley reviewing the footage I had just shot. (I edited that all out.) I asked myself, why did you DO that? But I think I was actually just caught up in the moment and was thinking about nothing but framing her gentle, heartbreakingly cute face and her soft little soles at the perfect angle. I think it worked! Eventually she bent her knees and pressed the soles of her feet on the seat. Usually when a girl does that, I stay in case she puts her feet back down, but it this case I left, because I had been sort of aggressive in shooting this and if this was her way of saying, "ok the sole party is over" I wanted to respect that. It's funny how a teeny girl like this -- I could have reached down and picked her up and put her in my pocket as I walked past her at the end! -- can totally rock you in such a way that you'd pretty much do whatever she wants. I know I would not be able to say no to her!
