We're just no there yet- maybe some day we will be. A lot of old stereotypical attitudes to break down. I don't think there is any real correllation between the two, it's probably just a coincidence and I'm sure there are loads of cases that aren't like that...
As for the mainstream idea, I think it's only really the idea that feet can look good and be attractive that is deemed "acceptable" to the mainstream. Smelling sweaty feet, I think, will never be considered normal. Anything that is enjoying something that is generally regarded as horrible is too out there to be considered normal. i find that often times women make the wrong decisions when it comes to men.
