We're always talking about what games we enjoy, so I got to thinking, what about the consoles? What are your favorite consoles? I've owned practically everything, with a few exceptions, since the Atari 2600. I tried to rank all the ones that I had and the reasons I liked/disliked each one just to create some conversation. Would love to know what you gamers enjoyed over the years. (I kept the handhelds and the PC off the list)

21. Philips CD-i - This thing was MASSIVE and it looked like an oversized VCR. The remote looked like it belonged to a VCR too and featured an analog stick. The ONLY reason I got this was that there are a handful of Zelda titles for this, albeit, HORRIBLE ones. Nintendo didn't approve of them, so they act like they don't exist. (FAVORTITE GAMES: none)

20. Atari Jaguar - Talk about trying to make a comeback. I got this on eBay because it was cheap and at that point I was trying to have one of everything. The remote for this system is probably the worst thing since the Powerglove. (FAVORITE GAMES: Alien vs. Predator)

19. Sega 32X - What a crock this Genesis attachment turned out to be. Not much I loved about this to be honest. (FAVORITE GAMES: NBA Jam, Doom, Virtua Fighter)

18. Sega CD - Slightly better than the 32X. Load times on the CDs could be quite horrible. (FAVORITE GAMES: Sherlock Holmes, WWF Rage in the Cage)

17. Panasonic 3DO - I think this thing cost like $700 when it came out. Might not be that much, but I'm pretty sure it was in that Neo Geo range. The controllers on this were close to the Sega Genesis with a bit of Super Nes feel to them, but to play two players you had to plug the one controller INTO the other controller. Strange, but not that bad. (FAVORITE GAMES: Samauri Shodown - the only reason I bought this to begin with)

16. Turbo Grafx 16 - The games for this came on little cards. They were the size of a business card/credit card with metal contacts on the end. System was the first 16 bit system, but didn't get much hype in the USA. (FAVORITE GAMES: Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge, Splatterhouse)

15. Sega Saturn - I actually liked this console and wish it would have held up better against the Playstation 1. There were some good games coming out for this, but it was cut WAY short and Sega moved onto the Dreamcast. (FAVORITE GAMES: Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Resident Evil)

14. Atari 2600 - My dad owned this and I still can remember switching the knob on the console to color or black and white. Games always worked in this thing, which can't be said of the Nintendo Entertainment System, which we got afterward. (FAVORITE GAMES: Pitfall, Bowling, Defender, Chopper Command, River Raid, Kaboom!)

13. Sega Master System - First time I played these games was on a Sega Genesis attachment that Sega released so you could play both the cartridges and card games (see Turbo Grafx 16 card description) that the Master System used on your Geneis. Why Nintendo DIDN'T do this for the Super NES, I have no clue. My cousins owned the attachment and had some select games. I went on eBay and got the actual console though. (FAVORITE GAMES: Outrun, After Burner)

12. Nintendo 64 - Won't lie, I got this only because I wanted to play Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I had a Playstation 1 and was content with the games for it. I did get a few games for it, but if it was on the PS1, I got it on that system instead. (FAVORITE GAMES: Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Star Wars Episode 1 Racer, Zelda: Major's Mask, Mario 64, Mario Kart 64)

11. Nintendo Gamecube - Had to have it, but by the end of it's life, this system could have been so much more. I really loved the controller and thought the Gameboy Player attachment to play your Gameboy/Gameboy Advance games on the TV was amazing. Now you have to purchase them online again and download them to your Wii. (FAVORITE GAMES: Zelda Windwaker, Luigi's Mansion, Homerun King, Mario Party, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Zero, Soul Caliber 2)

10. Nintendo Wii - Some games I love the whole motion thing, but others make this system not so great. I thought I'd hate the controllers, but they're not actually bad at all and I love how on some games you can chose to play with the motion or tilt the controller to resemble a classic NES controller. (FAVORITE GAMES: Zelda Twilight Princess, Wii Sports, New Super Mario Bros., Punch Out)

09. Sega Dreamcast - Another Sega system that had some nice kick to it that was cut short by a new Playstation system release. Controllers weren't the most comfy, but the memory card being in the controller and displaying information for games was a neat touch. {FAVORITE GAMES: Resident Evil Code Veronica, Sega Bass Fishing, Sonic The Hedgehog, Ready to Rumble Boxing, Gauntlet Legends, Dead or Alive 2, Soul Caliber)

08. Super Nintendo - So much more dependable to start a game and/or not turn off and blink compared to the original NES. I REALLY wish, however, that Nintendo did like Sega and made an attachment for the old games to play in this system too. I can remember my dad being PISSED off about that. (FAVORITE GAMES: Zelda A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros. All Stars, Super Punch Out, Donkey Kong Country)

07. Playstation 1 - The black CDs were enough to make this thing cool. The controllers are a staple of gaming as they really haven't changed much with the exception of the rumble and analog sticks being added. I commend Sony for keeping that familiar. (FAVORITE GAMES: Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, WWF Smackdown)

06. XBox 360 - Had no issues with this system as I know many have had the red ring of death. I haven't played mine much lately, but that's because it's on the family TV. (FAVORITE GAMES: Tomb Raider Legends, Tomb Raider Legacy, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4)

05. Playstation 3 - Mine gets used more for Blu Ray than games, but there are some games I really have enjoyed lately. At first, I wasn't too impressed, especially after mine died on my 2 months after the warranty ended. (FAVORITE GAMES: God of War Collection, Ghostbusters, Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Darksiders, Tomb Raider Underworld, Batman Arkham Asylum)

04. XBox - To be honest, I HATED this system when I first got it. Mostly because the controllers were shit. When they revamped them, I fell in love and began playing this system quite a bit. (FAVORITE GAMES: Halo, Halo 2, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, Stars Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2, Star Wars Republic Commando, Doom 3, X-Men Legends)

03. Playstation 2 - This system was hard not to put at the top, especially since it was also my default DVD player for years too. I didn't put it there because I just have too many fond memories of the two consoles still left, but this one was nothing short of amazing. (FAVORITE GAMES: Tekken Tag Tournament, Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Gauntlet Dark Legacy, Medal of Honor Frontline, Resident Evil Code Veronica X, Resident Evil Dead Aim, Silent Hill 2)

02. Sega Genesis - Aside from the buttons on the controllers getting stuck or not working, this system was always in working order and I loved playing it. (FAVORITE GAMES: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Ghouls n' Ghosts, Sports Talk Baseball, Golden Axe)

01. Nintendo Entertainment System - I had my ass parked in front of the TV more to this system than any other. Not just as a kid, but when I rebought one years ago, I did it all over again. I actually bought 4 of them on eBay because they were really cheap bundles people were selling with game lots and accessories. My only gripe with this system is having to blow into the games, jiggling them around, or whatever means you use to get the games to work. I only ever owned the front loading version of the NES, so I'm not sure if the top loading one was better. {FAVORITE GAMES: Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Contra, Skate or Die, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Arcade Game, Excitebike, Mega Man 2)

Damn that was more than I thought it would be. Hope I didn't bore ya. And all the above games weren't what I said was the BEST games for each system, just the ones I could remember playing off the top of my head. There are quite a few games I never got to play on a system, such as God of War 1 or 2, that I got as a port on a later one (PS3).

3) SNES: The source of endless entertainment in my younger days, with such a huge library of games to choose from. Any gamer can find what he's looking for in this little gem. Arcade Ports, RPG's, great two player games. Just pure fun, nicely designed controllers, charming graphics, I can't say enough about my love for this little machine.

2)PS1: Boy did I ever love this thing, even more so than the PS2. Hours of enjoyment playing such titles as: Syphon Filter, Monster Rancher, DragonSeed, Alundra, not to mention the Final Fantasy games that were pretty much exclusive to this little disc spinner. The controllers were perfect, nice and light, great shape, cool layout.

1)I was gonna pick a portable gaming system for the number one spot, but it's not really a console per se. So the title goes to Xbox 360. Sure the PS3 is a hardware beast, but the xbox makes it so easy to connect with all your friends, has a nice selection of games behind it, and over-all just my console of choice for sitting on the couch and wasting a couple hours.

Strap yourself in. It's going to be a long post.

(in no particular order of favorites)

1. Super Nintendo - My first ever console, and pretty much got me into video games. I really enjoyed the Mario, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong games that I had, but since it was my parents mainly buying games for me, I missed out on a lot of quality titles back then.

Rider's Picks
-Super Mario All-Stars
-Super Mario World
-Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
-Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
-Donkey Kong Country
-Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
-Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble
-Kirby Superstar
-Kirby's Dreamland 3
-Plok

2. Wii - I spent 6 months trying to find one, and it finally paid off after a while. It's motion technology promotes physical activity, I'll give it that, but I prefer games that use the Gamecube controller or the Wiimote sideways. The Virtual Console is a pretty neat tool, and was a third of the reason why I wanted one (the other two thirds being Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Pokemon Battle Revolution (which sucked)). I only have a few games for it, however; lack of money over the last three years hindered my Wii game collection from growing. Thank goodness that it's backward compatable with GCN games; having to constantly hook up my GCN whenever I'd want to play a GCN game would have been a bother.

Rider's Picks
-Super Smash Bros. Brawl
-Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars
-Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
-Super Mario Galaxy
-Pokemon Rumble (WiiWare)

3. Gamecube - I remember the first time I even heard of the GCN was on Serebii.net back in 2001, when it was talking about the then-upcoming Super Smash Bros. Melee. A shame that this little box did so poorly last gen. It had quite a few quality titles that you won't find on other consoles. Extra fail for having online technology bult in, and yet only two or three titles that actually uses it to its full extent.

Rider's Picks
-Super Smash Bros. Melee
-Tales of Symphonia
-Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
-The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
-The Legend of Zelda: Twlight Princess
-Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
-Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
-Soul Calibur II
-Phantasy Star Online: Episode I & II

4. Nintendo 64 - Got my first taste of this one playing Mario Kart 64 over my brother's house, and got hooked. One Christmas, I finally got my hands on it. Though looking back, this console is probably what alienated Nintendo from the third parties, because it stuck with the cartridge format while Sony's Playstation used CDs (and Nintendo lost Square and Final Fantasy VII because of it, too).

Rider's Picks
-Super Mario 64
-Paper Mario
-Mario Kart 64
-Super Smash Bros.
-The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
-The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
-Pokemon Stadium
-Pokemon Stadium 2
-Pokemon Puzzle League
-Star Fox 64
-Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
-Diddy Kong Racing
-Sin & Punishment: Successor of the Earth (unreleased in the West on N64; released through the Wii's Virtual Console)
-Banjo-Kazooie
-Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon

5. Playstation 2 - Found one in the donation area at my old job, and was allowed to take it. That's how I got my PS2 for free. [Big Grin] Sadly, I didn't buy too many games for it, since I was focusing more on my Nintendo consoles. It also didn't help that even the first-party controllers I bought seemed to malfunction after a short while.

Rider's Picks
-Okami
-Tales of the Abyss
-Kingdom Hearts

6. Game Boy [Color]- The handheld of choice for over a decade. Tetris helped sale copies, but I was never that big on Tetris. Instead, what pulled me in was none other than Pokemon. With both of those titles, the Game Boy pretty much owned the handheld market.

Rider's Picks
-Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow
-Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal
-Super Mario Bros. Deluxe
-Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
-Kirby's Dreamland
-Kirby's Dreamland 2

7. Game Boy Advance - Essencially a portable SNES, except without the X and Y buttons. Despite that, many SNES titles found ports and updates on this little device, along with new titles. Of course, I had to get the Pokemon games, but there were more that I enjoyed on this handheld.

Rider's Picks
-Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald
-Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green
-Golden Sun
-Golden Sun: The Lost Age
-Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3
-Fire Emblem
-Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
-Mother 3 (unreleased outside of Japan for no real reason; has a very good translation ROM patch)
-The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past + Four Swords
-Drill Dozer

8. Nintendo DS/DSi- Nintendo's first true innovative endeavor of a console. The twin screens, mainly the bottom one being a touchscreen, really captivated me upon seeing it for the first time. And although it had a slow start, it's really picking up its game, with both the hardcore and the casual crowds. As it s not region-locked, this was the first and so far only console that I have inported games for. One would argue that this is where Nintendo started to realize that this is where there's money to be earned from the casual crowd... ...It's also had its fourth revision (DSiXL), and there's a new one on the way, tentatively titled the "3DS", as it can apparently utilize 3D graphics without the need of 3D glasses. Let's see how that turns out.

Rider's Picks
-Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum
-Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver
-Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team
-Mario Kart DS
-Kirby: Canvas Curse
-Kirby Super Star Ultra
-New Super Mario Bros.
-Jump Ultimate Stars (unreleased outside of Japan due to licensing issues)
-Bleach: Dark Souls
-Meteos

Good stuff. I can't say I got into handhelds much. I have owned a Sega Gamegear, Nintendo Gameboy Advance and the Nintendo DS. Honestly, I got the Nintendo ones just to play the Zelda titles. I think the Sega Gamegear was miles ahead of Nintendo with the backlit screens. Even the Gameboy Advance didn't have that originally. I remember the store in the mall would mod your Gameboy Advances for that so you didn't need to have the 10 pound light attachment on top putting a glare on the screen just so you could see it.

Just out of curiousity, were there any consoles you rocked when you were a kid? I love the next gen consoles, but there is a nostalgia about stuff like NES and Genesis for me.

Well out of the Sega Megadrive, PS1, PS2,Xbox, Xbox 360, Gameboy and PSP, I'd have to go with one of the Xbox's...hard to say which one as I have better games on my Xbox, but obviously, graphics and general gameplay is immense on the 360.

Okay so anyone here ever get pissed the fuck off enough to smash their controller against a wall or floor or whatever?

I managed to fuck up one Gameboy, 2 xbox, countless Playstation and maybe a sega megadrive controller out of pure frustration...haha

Oh God yes, Mostly Nintendo, the old 8bit grey box, also had an Atari Lynx 2, which was the first handheld, I think. When I was a kid, my parents had a Magnavox Odyssey, which was weird. You put the game screen over the tv screen to simulate baseball fields and racetracks.

Andy,

Sega Genesis controllers were probably the aim of most of my frustration. Plus the damn buttons would stick on their own anyhow.

Same with the Megadrive.

Great thread, Patrick.

Apart from the Atari 2600 I unfortunately never owned any consoles in the 80s. I was more the home-computer nerd with a Commodore 64, a C-128 and an Amiga 500, mostly playing text adventures and programming in Assembler.
In the 90s I had a PC and thought that was the best thing ever (Castle Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, etc). I didn`t even own a Gameboy.

Now, about 30 years later I´ve started buying all the old consoles at fleamarkets and yard sales. If you`re lucky you can get them dirt cheap. I now own all types of Gameboys, a NES, SNES, PS 1 + 2, and loads of oldschool games. I´m mostly into 2D-shmups (shoot-em-ups), stuff like R-Type, Gradius, Salamander, etc. You can buy those old NES/SNES cartridges for about 1 Dollar or even less.
A while back I bought a neat little handheld that contains 20 Sega games. It can even be attached to a TV.

I kind of regret having missed the consoles in their time...but then again, they were pretty expensive those days...now you can buy a PS1 + 100 games for about $15 at a fleamarket.

I feel ya, Hal. It can be an expensive hobby. My friends used to crack on my for 4 years playing World of Warcraft (WoW) - saying I was dumb for buying the game and then paying money each month to play it. Now that I've put that down (for now, perhaps?) I've gone back to consoles and it's more expensive that way because each game is like $40 - $60 and you can beat them. With WoW, they always add new stuff to it.

Definately the sony "PSP" [Hump]

Once you boost/mod it with the latest firmware, you can run emulators MAME, Nintendo 64, SEGA MASTER/GENESIS, Even Playstation 1 games from your handheld and have more control of your movies to store on your expadable memory so you save the ware on your optical lazer and extends battery life...... it's AWESOME!!!!!

Setback to me would be the low powered built-in speakers, other than that, it's sweet [Big Grin]

FootLongSub Zero,

My friend was looking at getting a PSP. He was going to go for the one where you can only download games to it, but I told him that he'd be stupid to get it. Of course, once the guy at the store said the same shit I did, now he agrees.

I have never played a PSP yet as I don't much like the handhelds. I liked the Sega Gamegear when I was a kid. I thought the Gameboy was bad and the Gameboy Advance was okay, except for the fact that I had the one that wasn't backlit and would have had to put a light attachment on it. Oh well, but I do have a Nintendo DS just so I can have the Zelda games.

Wouldn't mind knowing what you like about the PSP as I've been looking at them, but never could make up my mind on it.

^^My friend it's worth to get one just to try (you have to add the aftermarket software of course *wink-wink*) I think you can even run the "Game-Gear" emulator on it also and the picutre quality would be better. I'm not 100% sure, but am confident enough to say that it's worth to the try. Don't have to buy the 'New One' that your friend was gettin', just get a 2nd or 3rd hand PSP-Portable (slim or fat) where the software stats are the same, just the physical appearance. Try a A PSP-Poraple FAT. Add the appropriate firmware and there you go [Smile]

i think nintendo 64 was the best, i can't think of a system that had more "must have" games

i never liked anything sega put out

I prefer sony much more over microsoft, better exclusive titles if you ask me and 360 exclusives can be played on a PC so i never saw the point in choosing an xbox over a playstation

my list out of the systems i owned

nintendo 64
ps3
ps2
super nintendo
ps1
nintendo
gamecube
atari

1. Sega Genesis: it's what really got me into video games. I still have it and it works. A lot of Genesis games, I have for the PS3.

2. PS2: Just an endless library of great games

3. PS3: The graphics, games, Blue Ray and capabilities make it my third favorite

I've always been a handheld guy. I own (since it's my work) all the consoles but I dunno... I just don't like them.

My favourite is probably the DS and PSP. This current handheld generation has been so brilliant.

I could never get into the PS2. Actually both the major IP's that Sony and MS own don't interest me at all. But I like my games with design intelligence and a lot of depth (so stuff like Valve, Nintendo, Level 5, Hidden Path).

I was a Nintendo guy until they started catering exclusively to kids. I think that was around when the Gamecube came out, but I'm not sure.

Once I got a PS2, it became my favorite. But I loved the NES, SNES, and N64 in their respective heyday.

I liked the Game Boy Pocket quite a bit. There was a great version of Ken Griffey Jr.'s MLB ported over from the SNES that absolutely rocked.

I've had all the PlayStation consoles, the original Xbox, Sega MegaDrive/Genesis, Nintendo Game Boy/Color and DS.

My most faves are the PS3 (HD gaming and films plus my PS3 is the original 60GB model so I can play most of my old PS2 library) and the PSP (Handheld gaming at it's finest plus access to the internet)
