In my younger days I had a Pontiac Firebird fetish I suppose. My first car was a '79 Firebird I got when I was 16 which I totaled after two months. Replacement car was an unsexy '68 Impala that was two tone rusted roof and vomit green. Later on when I was out of college and working I bought a '88 Trans Am GTA fully loaded leather interior and the special Z-Rated tires for costing you an arm and a leg when you need to replace them. I remember putting a high performance muffler on the thing and having the rest of the exhaust system redone. Luckily I came to my senses and got rid of the thing by the time I had put as much money into maintenance as I had for the price of the car.

It was a nice looking ride though for the times.

Damn, found a picture of both of them....

American muscle the whole way! I had a 1996 Camaro Z28, rally red,6 speed, leather, SS hood, wheels and spoiler. The guy i bought it from put the SS badges on it too, but i hate rebadges so i put Z28 emblems back on it. Got 11 tickets within the first 4 months! I finally sold it to a friend at 155k miles when it needed more maintenance than i had time for. I had headers, cat delete, borla muffler with duals, chrome tips, intake, tune, adjustable shocks, short throw shifter, poly mounts, over the valve cover wires, a D+D transmission, spec stage two clutch, lightweight flywheel and a few other things. It was a fun, fast, loud car!
Now that I've gotten older, i have a 1996 Camaro SS, a true SS, number 275, rally red, leather,t tops, oil cooler etc. is loaded save the power passenger seat and traction control. That one stays in the garage most of the time, as it's completely bone stock with 2200 miles on it. Once in a while i take it to get ice cream or to a show.
I also just had to get an suv for my baby, picked up a Pontiac torrent GXP. Not exactly a performance machine, but its nice.
I hung with a lot of people that had rice burners back in the day, and i can honestly say that while i prefer American iron, if the car is done nicely and the owner isn't a giant douche i can respect it no matter what country it came from.

I have owned nine Volkswagens and one Subaru. I'm not a fan of American vehicles at all.

Currently a 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon for camping. For roasting around it's a 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX. It has been ECU dialed, has the STI exhaust system and suspension upgrades, K&N cold air intake. There's about 300hp under the hood at the moment. Just last week I upgraded the brakes to slotted rotors and ceramic pads. No more brake dust on the rims.

Ledaemon: that's a nice ass firebird! I bet you were picking up all the ladys in that one. haha.

KDCX859: NICE ass SS! I bet you that thing is a beast! Why are u leaving it all stock? I bet if you add all the other stuff you added to that Z28, you would be on another level! Is there that big of a difference from the Z28 to the SS?

Flip Flop fan: How's that subaru treating you man? I WISH I had one. How hard is it to maintain that turbo though? Or do you change it yourself?

We bought it second hand certified from a dealer and put an extended warranty on it. So far anything that has broken has gone back to them.

Once the coverage is gone I'll be doing most the work myself. It's completely cramped under the hood as the car is completely symmetrical and the inter-cooler sits on the very top of the engine under the hood scoop. Should make for a good time.

Other than that the car is nuts. Throws you in your seat quite well. Also chugs gas when you're heavy footed.

My buddie has the new 2011 wrx imprezas, their nuts! I still like your year better. They look great!

Thank you sir. The reason I'm leaving it stock is that it's the first year for the Camaro SS since 1972, is a limited run, special edition, low number, low mileage car. Basically it's the 275th SS built since 72! I feel it would lose something if i modded it. If i did do any mods it would all be something i could revert back to stock at any time. Something simple like intake, exhaust, tune, basic bolt ons. It's pretty quick right from the factory for its day, and i like cruising around in it as is. I would love to have dual exhaust outlets, but it came with the optional 'two on the left' from SLP that sounds great and brings horsepower up to 310.
As for the differences between the Z28 and SS, there are a few. All SS cars started life as a Z28, then were sent to SLP for modification. They got an SS specific hood, spoiler, wheels, badging, and ID plate with build number, a functional ram air intake, special exhaust, and special suspension. There were optional shifters, car covers, floor mats, exhausts, oil coolers and a few other little goodies. Depending on what was ordered, HP was either 305 or 310, up from 285 for a normal Z.
My car doesn't have all the options, but it's still a fun car! I love the exhaust note and the low rpm torque. When i took the cats out of my old z, it lost some low end, but gained up high. It's fun to take the t-tops off and just cruise. Doesn't mean i don't get on it, it's very easy to do triple digits, hell I'm just shifting out of 3rd at 90 lol!

LeDaemon, did you have a Mullet to go along with that car buddy? hahah

American Muscle all the way for cars, with VW coming in close second for longevity and performance and a split between Japanese trucks and American diesel powered trucks.

When I owned those cars I did not have a mullet. However, I did have a mullet with a friggen perm in it back in '88 when I owned an Olds Cutlass. Seemed like a good idea at the time. [Laugh]

I said I thought it was a good idea at the time. A girl I had the hots for did it to me. Hey, wasn't this a car thread and not a hairstyling thread anyway?

Nobody has love for the imports? Hondas? Nissans? Toyotas? [Confused]
I got myself a little 4 door honda civic si! I may not be able to keep up with the V8's in the long run, but I sure as hell have em on the take off! I can take out some V6's! camaro's, those firebird's and the mustangs too!
I perfer to have a rear wheel drive though, a little bit of drifting on the corners haha [Big Grin] [Thumbs Up]

I drive a '98 Acura Integra GSR. All I've owned were imports. I got into street racing back in 2000 but had enough of running from cops and driving hours just to find a spot to race. Now I've joined organizations that I can run my car on tracks against other drivers. Currently I'm in NASA and SCCA and will run my car at the end of the month at Willow Springs Raceway.

Wait wait wait...are you kidding me?! Willow springs?! I'm like an hour or two away from there! I live near the lax airport where do you stay at?

I've been dying to go to that track but I'm not sure what are the requirements, how much it cost to get in and if I need a helmet. Can just anyone go and track their car? Or do we like actually have to be in a race division and qualify and all that?

How's that gsr? My buddy has one of those! They are super nice! It looks all stock, what do you have in it?

Posted by FtLckr26 (Member # 13998) on :

I now live In Vegas, so I'll be driving to Willow Springs on the 27th and running my car on the 28th.

The requirements are havong a car that runs and doesn't leak oil, coolant or any fluid. If its safe for the streets, its safe to run. You don't need to be part of a racing organization, just sign up, inspect your car and pay the fee. Cost varies, but if you sign up now, you'll pay $95-$120 for one day.
Helmets are required but I believe they have some for rent. Yeah, anyone can track their car, it just needs to pass inspection, which is no leaking fluids, battery tie-down, working seat belt(s), and good tires.
You don't have to qualify or be in a division, just go to learn and have fun.

Yeah, my car looks stock which is the look I'm going for but the head has some work done to it. Camshafts, cam gears, valvetrain, intake, header, exhaust.

Let me know if you want to meet up. I'll be there from the 27th to the 29th this month.

Dayum super sick! How many hp you pushing? You did all the work yourself? And do you have the jdm front end? In the first pics its hard to tell bc its so far away.
I'm down to go to the track, if I can call off work. I've never been to a track, I've been dying to go! Ill let you know in a couple of days.

Posted by FtLckr26 (Member # 13998) on :

I'm at 184hp but next year my goal is to reach 200+. Gonna rebuild the block with higher compression and oversize pistons.

All the work was done by me except for tuning. I don't know how to tune. The car has the usdm front end. I used to have the jdm front for a few years but decided to go back to the round headlights. Looks better and stands out less to thieves.

To drive or to own? I prefer Jap imports. I like small quick pocket rockets. Like the shape/model of the Generation 5 Honda Prelude Vti-R.

To look at, I prefer the American classics. 73 Dodge Charger, Mustang 68 Shelby Fastback and the 68 Camaro.

Exotics would lie with Lamborghini Mercielago.

Posted by NorcalfeetStudios (Member # 732) on :

Subzero: What about those newer Mazda 3 turbo cars? Would you classify it as American or Jap pocket rocket? It has Ford written all over it but it is technically an import. Cool cars though.

This was my bitch back in England:

Same colour, so no difference whatsoever.

Yep. So how many of you, with all the cars mentioned above, could get up to around 70MPG on a good day? [Laugh]

In answer to the original point posted, I'd always favour imports. American muscle cars aren't made for regular driving. The only thing they excel at is drag racing, which requires only a fraction of the skill of proper racing and is boring as sin to watch.

Give me a Mitzi or Subaru any day over Mustang.

Yea,i agree the older muscle cars didn't turn for shit, but they have advanced quite a bit over the years. Many have ditched the live axle for independent rear suspension and mag ride shocks, better front links and weight distribution. However far they have come though, i agree with you an awd import would run circles around them on a road course. That being said,i like my smoky burnouts and waging the tail whenever i want ;-)

Wasn't too sure which car you were talkin' about so had to do a bit of research. I've seen a few of them around. Maybe due to the name and the turbo I'd say Jap. But IMO, by the look, it's a cross between a Ford Focus and a VW Golf.

I see Andy chucked up the car he drove in his homeland. This was the last car I had in New Zealand before comming to Australia. Mitsi Legnum. Jap wagon. (Not exact pic but the same)

@FootLongSub Zero, that prelude is great! that's my favorite year they were made, the other year had those huge tail lights and small headlights.
I am a huge import fan, whether it would be from old school stuff to new school. I am mostly a Honda person, that because i own one right now.
I have attached a few pics to show you guys what i am more into. That doesnt mean i dont like muscle though, but they have to be hooked up the right way.

Nice list of cars Raym3n. If I were to get a new car, it would be an Evo X. I'm also growing fond of the Genesis, even though it's a Hyundai. The body lines on it are sexy.

Yeah cool set Raym3n [Thumbs Up] .

I remember way back in my early teens. This was the car I wanted as soon as I got my licence. A buddy of mine beat me to it. Honda CRX
 -

I also liked the "Nissan 200sx S15", Mazda Rx7 (batmobile looking one [Big Grin] I think it's series 7), Toyota MR2 MKII, Honda NXS is a pretty cool lookin' car looks more exotic.

Those evo X are sick! But I still like the previous model bettter! And as for the genesis, I too have fallen into to the dark side. Hyundai has been making some nice cars lately and a lot of them are turbo! But my question is, how are the quality of the cars? Do they last? Cuz at the end of the day, they are still hyundai's.

Totally agree with all your cars! Especially the 200sx and rx7, perfect for driving sidewayz!

The ZR1 Lingenfelter or Z06 or even a Dodge Challenger SRT-8 with a supercharged HEMI and a good driver can probably out pull or stay even with AWD's on a road coarse. I know a few who have done it successfully. It's mainly about the driver more than the exact dynamics of the car.

How did that white subaru do? The Br-z or Fr-z its called right? Thos look crazy

That was a Subaru BRZ. I didn't get to see it run. Any time I had was spent getting my car ready for the next run or just staying out of the heat. You could have came to watch. It cost $10 to enter the gate. I had a blast. Got some videos of me. Definately going back as soon as I can.
