I've had an idea for a good non-fiction book rolling around in my head for quite a while; but I dont have the software on my computer to begin an extensive project. Does anyone know any freeware sites I could download some type of program to get my project on wheels? My wife suggested using microsoft word, but I was like "Meh". I appreciate any advice.

I don't know of any free page layout software. Maybe you could use a MS Word Template or try MS Publisher?
I know the latter isn't free, but it's not too expensive either.

You could just speak it into a tape-recorder, and have an editor write your words for you. That will cost you though.

Do you mean software to actually publish the book? Like a free version of InDesign or something? If you could find a pirated copy of that, I would recommend it. Most of the publishers and writers I know work with that when creating the layouts.
When actually writing, however, most use Microsoft Word, but I guess that would be a bit more tricky if your non-fiction book is picture-heavy.
GOOD LUCK!!

If you're talking about the planning or writing there are several free office suite programs out there. I use Open Office. MS One Note is good for organizing thoughts or ideas into notebooks, sections and pages. The most important thing of all though- be sure to back everything up!
