I have a little friend who works at a Cash & Carry discount store - Sara. She's a doll, very cute, and has been asking me how to "get in the footworld". Today we picked up an old (used) film camera from a Goodwill store. It's an APS format camera, using small film cartridges - a kid's camera.

Little Sara LOVED it, she thought it was "cute", so I scored it for her. Then we went and took foot photographs with it, had them developed at a Rite Aid drug store and scanned them for the web.

So what kind of photos can you get from a five-dollar film camera? Not exactly national geographic standard, but not exactly trash, either. I now present new footgirl Sara and the results from her film camera.

I tried a combination of Smith Victor flood lights and a couple of slave flashes, which were triggered by the little built-in on the camera. Experimented around to try and get the best balance, etc. Tricky going.

Sara has silky, creamy little legs and soft, smooth feet. She loves shoe shopping and claims to know when a shoe salesman is enjoying her feet; which is a source of pride for her.

Overall, the results were not that bad. I recently did a little experiment with a three-dollar digital camera, but I think this worked out just as well. Little Sara's happy, she loves her new camera and is proud to be a new member of our little foot family up here.

Incidentally, she does have sweet feet and enjoys the idea of showing them off. She loves shoes, collects bootleg recordings and autographs. She takes a few night classes, and hopes to one day be a cosmetologist.

We've got a couple rolls developed, so I'll have more to share at some point. Scanning is kind of tedious, but yes there are more.

You really hit the nail on the head with the "playful" element of Sara. There will be plenty more of her, this is just the very first of her foot experience - and she is very motivated.

Lighting is important, and even more so with cheap cameras. I've got a couple of "digi-flash" slaves of variable output - a couple of well-placed slave flashes can bring a cheap camera up quite a bit.

You've got that right! They seem to come out of the woodwork though, this world is FULL of beautiful, darling girls - and yes, we will continue to photograph them as long as there are cameras (or whatever replaces them).

Actually, Hal, that's pretty much what I've been thinking about. Doing foot photographs with specifically low-tech cameras and equipment. I've even ordered a used Soviet Holga film camera from ebay ($19.00 plus shipping), a 1960s Brownie and a Japanese "Hello Kitty" disposable.

Incidentally, in this case even the scanner a was a cheapie - an old Microtek from the days of Windows 95, and it even had a SERIAL cable.

The $3.00 keychain digital camera thread from the Misc. section ... some guy stepped on the thread and started posting his own photos in it, so I just deleted it. I may reprise it though, because I've got a LOT of new photos of Malory, Kristin and two of the Ambers; some of them are not bad.

Sara is a doll. So the saying "You never know what you will get at the 5 and dime." is true. In this case you got at least 5 great feet pics with 10 perfect toes in them. What I wouldn't give to learn the Art of Photography from the Master! Master Ben! Its a win win situation. You get to learn from the master and take pics of the Girlswithfeet Gems!

It's true, you never know WHAT you might get from a 5-and-dime, and you really don't know what a darling footgirl you are likely to run into - it's a big, beautiful world, seve60 and girls like Sara (and feet) make it even better.

It's a bit of a surprise to find just how much you can squeeze out of common everyday elements - such as a used cartridge film camera. Having little friends like Sara is the greatest motivation.

There actually is more of Sara - we shot two film cartridges on this and she wants to do a video. Something along the lines of Leah's home repair foot episodes. We'll definitely be seeing more of her.

Your observation of Sara's look, and what's going on in her head is SPOT ON. It is exact. She loves the idea of men being enamoured of her (and specifically her feet). She loves shoe shopping and delights in being able to tell which shoe salemen are excited by her feet. This attitude is what's behind her "look".

I am in awe at the abundance of beauty that surrounds you all the time Ben. I'm very impressed.

THis is another great examle how a master photog and great subjects makes for incredible pictures despite the cost of the equipment.

I love this set.. it's also inspiring.. because now it means with more thought to the shot, I can also provide equally impressive shots (and not worry about using my 'cheap' point and shoot when i don't have the big camera)

my wife is a tick shy of 5'3"... but love her small package! it's awesome!!!

I love the idea of sterling images being delivered through "cheap point and shoot" equipment, and it's obvious you know from a personal standpoint - big things DO come in small packages.

Great shots Ben. I'm a graphic artist for a newspaper & get a lot of photos sent in taken with expensive cameras by people with no clue how to read the manual & they look like shit. But this is just awesome work you've done with an out of date camera! Oh, and Sara is damn foxy as hell.

I should have played up Sara's soles a lot more, they are soft and smooth. Next posting will have a lot more of that. In fact, we just got one of the rolls back yesterday with some closeups on it.

I love it Ben! What I really respect is that you prove that you don't need a thousand dollar, million megapixel camera to take a good quality photo. It bothers me that people believe that more megapixels will magically make them a better photographer.

The thread was in the Misc section, I was trying not to call attention to the photos themselves, but rather the oddity of the camera used. Some guy stepped on the thread by posting his own photos in it (HUGE photos), so I just deleted the thread. If I repost it, I'll send you a note as a "heads up".

The thread was in the Misc section, I was trying not to call attention to the photos themselves, but rather the oddity of the camera used. Some guy stepped on the thread by posting his own photos in it (HUGE photos), so I just deleted the thread. If I repost it, I'll send you a note as a "heads up".

and P.S., Malory's freaking gorgeous! No matter what you take her pictures with. Where'd these pictures come from?

THis is another great examle how a master photog and great subjects makes for incredible pictures despite the cost of the equipment.
