That approach tends to work for me too. I'm not at all shy about liking feet so I usually go ahead and let them know that I have a foot fetish pretty early into a relationship(actually it's usually before it can even be called a 'relationship'). I don't really wanna waste time with a girl that's not gonna be cool with it. So I like to get it out of the way pretty quick ya know?

i always lucked out, my past girlfriends would ask me if i had any fantasies/fetishes and i would say i had one but wouldnt tell them right away to get them more willing to accept it. they've all been ok with it after i eventually told them. one of them even made sure to tease me occasionally and always have footplay as part of our sex.
