The bigger - more mysterious question would be "who didn't start out with a Sears or Penney's catalog?" I know for sure I did - those and the teen ,agazines my sister had.

For me, it was boating and water-skiing mags that were early whacking-material. There was the occasional catalog photo that garnered my attention.
