Looking to do more videos but currently using an SLR Camera's HD video capability but would like to break away from that and use a dedicated one. Any recommendations from content providers that have had good luck fine detail and good price point? Thanks!

I used a Panasonic camcorder from 2003-2009 and after it broke I bought a Canon HV40.
The Canon models HV20/30/40 all still record on tape, which has postive and negative sides. If you prefer a camera that saves on memory cards (or HDD) then I would recommend a defferent camcorder.

Thank you for your recommendations. I still prefer tape as it's cheaper to buy and doesn't compress the video like HDD or SD cards do. I can do more editing as well. I do like Canon a lot as well so going with these models make sense.

Thanks again guys!

Great camera. I still have the older generation HV20 and it still takes fantastic video.

Indeed it does. In my mind, Canon, hands down is a superior brand. Beautifulfeetonline is shot exclusively with Canon hardware. Yes, the entire HV series rocks my socks.

The HV 40 would be the best of the consumer level Canon bunch for making home movies, though some reviews argue Sony to be better.
The HV40's main selling point is that it shoots progressive scan video in native format.
The 20 and 30 employ the lesser progressive segmented frame technology.
Many producers aren't aware of the difference between progressive and interlaced,
but simply stated, interlaced video doesn't work as well on the net since all computers and modern HDTVs are progressive scan displays.
You can de-interlace while editing, but it's more work and still won't look as good.

Where these little cameras come up short:
Low light performance, especially since poor lighting is a major plague of the foot fetish industry, unless you're shooting outdoors,
and the built-in mono microphone tends to pick up a lot of unwanted wind and camera handling noise, unless you're running a dedicated external mic.

The HDV format is actually quite compressed. It fits 4 1/2 times the data into the same file size as regular DV, and tapes eventually degrade.
HDV resolution is also limited to 1440x1080. Full HD being 1920x1080. HDV uses a pixel aspect ratio of 1.33 to stretch to 1920,
but it's not as detailed as real 1080p.

DSLR Cameras with full HD video capability are the way of the future, soon to be standard on every new camera,
whereas you'd have to spend thousands to get a pro HD cam. Yeah, technology is getting pretty amazing these days.

I heard that the auto-focus sucks when recording HD-vids with DSLR cameras. Is that true?
I´m thinking about buying the Canon 5D and it would be great to have a good photo-cam and camcorder combined in one.....but I need a good auto-focus because I film a lot of "barefoot-walking-on-the-street" clips.
Another disadvantage of DSRL cams is their weight/size, plus most of them don`t have a rotatable screen.

Weight and size of modern DSLR cameras are remarkable considering that one medium size camera can now do most of what used to take 2 large cameras,
unless you're thinking along the lines of a consumer level point&shoot, but even those have gotten pretty compact and powerful.

Minor issues like auto-focus and flip-out screens will no doubt be addressed in the next upcoming generations.
Most pros manual focus anyway. One of the biggest problems of trying to autofocus on something low contrast in the foreground, like say a FOOT for example,
is that the camera tends to constantly hunt for focus, and often locks onto something in the background; one of the most common and annoying
things about many videos on the net these days. Doesn't matter if you're even shooting HD if it's out of focus.

Panasonic has got some great cutting edge video technology too. They're the current leader in the plasma and 3D-HD market.

OK...good guy neigh (love cbf, btw...fab!)...I have a Canon HF10 that shoots 1080i and I save on sdhc cards. Problem is how can I record it in est res so I can watch on my dlp 57" TV. Right now, I burn from camcord onto my combo GoVideo deck dvd/HVS but I heard those dvds I'm making are maybe only 480. I can only use the red/yellow/white rca cables as its only input that can go out from canon to the dvd deck.
As far as editing video, i'm totally new to using computer to do that. I had the canon software that came with camcord but have since lost it (and it was tough to learn as I recall). Somebody said I shout either buy a blu-ray bruner or pay somebody to edit my cards onto blu-rays...both seem to expensive.

So my questions boiled down:
Is there a cable that I can use from camcorder to disc maker?
Is there any easy to use or free software that can handle Canon propriety format. Is that AVDV (or something like that)?
My older TV makes it difficults, since I think newer ones feature usb inputs so u can just play a thumb drive on the tv in full 1080, I imagine.
And last question...the vidoe I shot and saved before in AVI files, and MPGs won't play now on any other computer...what gives?

That's a cryin shame to have HD footage and only be able to see it in 480i.

I recommend you save yourself a lot of hassle and sell that old DLP for a new HDTV. They've gotten really cheap now, and all the new ones have HDMI inputs, so you'd be able to plug your camera straight in via HDMI cable, and simply press play.

I just sold my older 2005 Panasonic for $500, and got the latest 50" G-25 plasma for only $1100. The picture quality is outrageous, and it has every kind of input, including an SDHC card slot.

That would solve all your problems for personal viewing, but If you wanted to upload to the net, then you'd also need editing software to compress and convert the files and sizes. There may be some free programs out there, but I use Sony Vegas, and Final Cut Pro.

i was prolly unclear before...I can plug in my camcord to the dvd deckand watch that way on my tv...hi def, and all...but I don't want to do the hassle of always plugging in my cam cord to watch video (unedited), if there's a cheap way to burn onto blu ray so I can just pop in the deck and watch
