i use comcast cable for the internet

when i use my laptop to download files sometimes i get over 200 kb's per second but then other times i get only 40 kb's per second

i'm downloading these files in the exact same location, why the different downloading speeds?

what causes them to be different?

thanks

I believe it depends on how many people are online at any given time. With cable internet, everyone shares the bandwidth.

How are you downloading these files? Are you downloading them from a torrent site or from a server like rapidshare, megaupload, sendspace etc. etc. etc.? If you're downloading from a torrent then your download speed is affected by the speed of the seeder(s) and of course the more seeders there are the faster your speed should be. If you're downloading from a server then the speed is usually affected by the amount of people downloading the same file you are at the same time. This isn't always the case though. Sendspace is a good example of this. With any other servers I've tried I usually get several hundred KB/s download speed but with Sendspace I can't seem to get anything higher than 50 KB/s. Of course it starts off fast but then it starts to go down until it reaches about 50 KB/s and then it settles there.

BTW what movie is your avatar from? I find it really annoying but then again I can't stand Jack Black.

It's not limited to just the people on your LAN, it's affected by the total number of people using your ISP.

Have you tried using a good download accelerator? There are some that will work with rapidshare or mega upload.

Thanks Russ. I had no idea they had a show on HBO. I can't believe people find him funny enough to give him a show.
