Well, it's complicated. For nearly 10 years, we have been each other's closest, dearest friend. She and I have been through a lot together. Failed marriages, bad relationships, some other very personal and private matters. I'm always there for her and she is always there for me. We tell each other, "I love you" every time we see each other or talk on the phone or text each other, which is daily. The problem is that I'm in my 50's, she is in her 30's. She is in the prime of her life, I am heading into the autumn of mine. I am nearly as old as her mother. In twenty years time, I don't want her looking at me and seeing an old man that she is stuck with, someone she gave up her youth for. And in 30 - 35 years, I don't want her having to change my diapers. I would never do that to her.

So as it is, we remain best friends, and I will always be here for her. Make no mistake, I do love her with all my heart, and I will until the day I die. She knows that, I've told her that using those words. And she always says, "I love you, too" in return. Were things different, she would most definitely be my wife.
