I caught some tail end of a debate Australia is going through about banning the sale of cigarettes. So what are your views on the subject? Do you think smoking should be against the law? Or just vote. I'm spanning the yes and no out a lil' so there will be 4 choices insted of 2.

Of course not. Not only should it not be banned, drugs should be legalized. It's a personal choice and to start smoking is a stupid, stupid, stupid fucking choice, among the dumbest one can make, and I wish I never started, but like all things, it should be your own choice to make, with your own concequences to deal with. I know there's the second hand smoke arguement but to me that's fucking bullshit. I can see the case for 2nd hand smoke being dangerous to like kids stuck in a car with a smoker and the windows rolled up or something like that or even in a resteraunt where your smoke may bother the people eating at the next table. In those instances your selfishly pushing your taste and poor choices onto those around you. If you're outside smoking in the fresh air, 2nd hand smoke is nothing. It's fucking outside air. If you wanna band smoking, better band cars, oil refineries, mines, boats, fucking powerplants, smoke stacks, and just about every other fucking thing. Do what you want. Be smart, don't smoke. But shut the fucking fuck up, get off your high horse and leave the smokers alone to do their own thing if they so choose.

To those that would say "yes" to this poll i have a follow-up question - does that mean that you believe alcohol should be banned too?

A lot of my reasons for the "no" vote are covered in Drunk_24-7's post, but there's also the problem that it would lead to black market cigarettes, Mafia-type organisations profiteering off of it, no tax going to the Government over the sale of tobacco etc etc.

Speaking of actually, I've looked it up and cross-referenced as much as I could using various different sources (using death stats, cost of medical treatment, population of the country, amount of tax on cigarettes, money spent of cigarettes annually etc) and have come to the conclusion that the following statement that I was told by a nurse in the UK is true:

"Smokers on average take out roughly 1/5 of the money they put in to the NHS [UK healthcare system]."

I like the way it is now. Smoking banned in public places and in businesses. No reason that people shouldn't be allowed to purchase cigs or smoke at home. I've never been a smoker, and to this day I still don't see how anyone finds it appealing to start. I'm still remembering my aunt who was a lifelong smoker since she was a teenager dragging around a little oxygen tank everywhere she went the last years of her life. Things you do in your youth will come back to kick your ass as far as quality of life due to your pesonal health goes as you get older.

I think its your choice if you wanna smoke cigs. Or not. Just not in public places. It pisses me off and gets on my nerves where its crowded and people light up a cig. They have no respect for others.
As for smoking marijuana, that should be legal lol. Just like cigs. Don't smoke in public places. Keep that shit to yourself and were all good. Haha

Yes, bc I should not have to inhale second hand smoke (which is much, much more deadly & dangerous than first hand smoke, bc the person smoking has a filter). And I can't get cancer from your drinking, that's why I don't believe alcohol should be banned.

It's not given the amount of SH smoke is so much lower than the amount of FH smoke given off by a cigarette.

And it's banned in public places around the world - surely you can't have an issue with people doing it away from others?

I take it from that answer that you drink then.

You can be mauled to death by an angry drunk, run down by a drunk driver (or have that happen to your relatives and friends).

Smoking doesn't affect your brain that way, so it could be argued to be safer for others, but equally as harmful to the user...

Hmmm, drunk driver with a suspended license and no insurance for a DUI smashed into a car behind me causing that car to then smash into my car. If he was only smoking a cigarette instead my guess is that wouldn't have happened.

Not really a very good analogy Keyfeet. [Cheers]

A drunk driver with a suspended license and no insurance is breaking the law when they do you harm. A smoker is doing me harm with absolutely no repercussions for his actions, you can't compare the two.

Can you carefully re-read my comment, please. I didn't say "I can't get killed from your drinking." Obviously you can get killed by anything.
I said, "I can't get cancer from your drinking." There is a difference.

I happen to actually be very allergic to cigarette smoke. And maybe you haven't heard of this thing called "wind." Second hand smoke can travel 25 feet just on a simple breeze. And somehow, it's always in my zone.

And no, I don't drink. Never have, never will.

Yeah, but Keyfeet, I rephrase what I was saying - perhaps I wasn't clear: atmospheric second hand smoke like that is so diluted with healthy air that it poses no health risk whatsoever.

On a side-note: I have a friend who's allergic to smoke too.

When we were in school we always asked him if he was sure he wanted to come with us at lunch time (when we had a smoke) he always came and didn't give a shit). H|e now smokes at university as a way of getting to know people.

I'm just adding that in as an amusing anecdote - nothing really to do with the conversation.

I'm sorry, but that's just not true.
