My old place of business was near two college campuses which attracted a lot of these kids to patronize it and of course a few did work for me. Guys would be skin and bones with star tattoos, unwashed "bed hair," scruffy little goat beards, and thick plastic frame glasses, and carry their "man purses" with them. Converse or Vans shoes as well as girl's pants for guys seemed to also be a requirement. All were very self important thinking themselves artistic intellectuals living a complete bohemian lifestyle (maintained by the courtesy of their parent's monthly checks.) On their iPods which were always plugged into their skulls would only be "indie" music and if there was a book they were reading it would be along the lines of something uplifting like Kafka. My guess it was the cover off of a Kafka hardback put over something else like a "Twilight" novel.
Every generation has some kind of fashion/lifestyle trend so the youth can say they are outside of the mainstream even though they are dressing like everyone else. Think back to metal heads, valley girls, new wavers, preppies, hippies, mods, beatniks, etc.
I have to wonder what the next generation of kids will be doing to rebel against this when these folks have kids one day that are this age.
One thing is these guys don't refer to themselves as "hipsters/scenesters" as they believe they don't fall into any kind of mainstream social clique. I'm sure there's many of you on Wu's that fall into this category since many younger members of college age in their early 20s are members here. Who can admit to it though???

I had thick rimmed black glasses (like the guy in the middle picture) back in the 70"s, does that count? Back then I also wore bell bottom pants, platform shoes and leisure suits.

I had the same "serial killer" glasses when I was 6 years old back then as well. I think more to the point was that there wasn't really any other choices available at the time.
You describe yourself like you were a cocaine snortin' dancin' fool at the discoteque. Did you have big permed hair and gold chains displayed on a hairy chest? That completes the image!

I would say most of younger people around here fall under the "scene" kid stuff. Scene- Big hair small clothes, tattoos piercings, lots of makeup (both sexes)VERY confident, and outgoing usually (differing them from "emos") pictures better describe it.

As for myself... Well i like a little bit of every style. I love piercings, so I have them. (scene) I hate tattoos so I don't have them. I like scene hair, so sometimes I wear my hair that way. (crooked bangs) I wear skinny jeans, but for different reasons. I hate getting the bottom of my pants wet, and skinnys prevent that, but I have regular pants as well. I wear a lot of makeup sometimes, but a lot of the time IU wear none at all. I love color. I'm not confident, I actually really shy and mousey. (emo trait). I like to make faces that make me look bad, and being disgusting. chewed up food in my mouth, pretending to pick my nose. Stuff like that is more of a i dont give a fuck punk attitude. I LOVE thrift shops, and will pick up old grandma sweaters to wear along with almost any crazy pattern I can find. I hate the 80's (not scene) I only like a few "screamo" bands. I like pop, I like rap, I like rock. I like alternative goth music. I like bands like The Birthday Massacre, and my favorite band is Jack Off Jill. I love punk bands such as Big D and the Kids table, Against me!, The Vandals. Then I listen to my childhood music like it was the best ten years of my life. (the 90's) I listen to foreign music such as Ozone, and no it's not dragstea din tei (numa numa). I actually really like their over songs a lot better. Boten ana is probably my favorite.I draw the line at jazz. Yuck. I enjoy reading anime, but also dislike a lot of it. I liked the Twilight books, but hate the movies and the hype of it all. I'm a very big Harry Potter fan. I love being crude and inappropriate, but I know when to straighten up. When people first meet me they describe me as quiet and polite. I seriously think if I belong to any particular trend pool it would be a small group of people. I wouldn't say I'm in denial of being part of a trend, but more of an I don't care who everyone thinks I am because stereotypes don't matter.

I live near Cal State Fullerton & It's the same here. I can handle the scene kids & hipsters but the "Douche Bags" & "Bros" are taking over the place. Just the worst kind of shit heads you've ever seen.

I was really into punk, industrial, and metal for a while in high school (mid-late 90s) .. which resulted in such fashion indulgences as combat boots and a penchant for chains. Since then I've employed pretty much a "jeans and plain (or band) t-shirt" kind of ensemble. Stayed away from tattoos until age 19 or 20. I have one. I remain unpierced. I like 80s melodies, and something fascinates me about the cartoons from back then. I like how the 80s happened just before the communications revolution of the internet and mobile phones. It's amazing how quickly things have changed since then.
Hipsters!
I have some acquaintances who I consider hipsters but who still manage to be pretty reasonable people, so I tend to not hold it against them. I've also met some real knaves among the hipster community. Or maybe they just looked like hipsters. They could have simply been elitists. Am I a hipster? No. Am I a Communist? Yes. Am I a mummy? Also yes.

Well, I didn't have the hair, I was on active duty, I didn't wear the chains or go to the discoteque. I was in to country music which had it's own dance revolution going on. (Thats another ugly topic in itself.)

It seems like almost ALL teenagers I see these days are either "emo" or "hipsters". My biggest peeve is when I see one say at the grocery store and they have their ipod on(full volume I'm assuming) get to the checkout and have to repeatedly say "What" because they are to self centered/lazy to take out the headphones!
As for me, I'm just an "average joe", I like to look good when I go out, as in not wearing jeans that have holes all over them, the 'ripped' look that is and I like to wear a t shirt that is my size(I'm not a big guy by any means but I have some muscle on me but I don't wear a size XSMALL when my size is medium!) I see a lot of middle aged guys doing that...don't know what to classify those guys as...

I think the Scene look is gonna get mainstream years to come..I'll be ready...not that I categorize myself in a particular group...but when the trend hits I will have my Scene shit ready Haven't cut my hair in an entire year now.

It is pretty mainstream here. People from all social groups dress that way. Preps, geeks, ect ect.
